Ohhh piranha's are nasty....

A month or so back someone caught a "Piranha" in Lake Norman. Had everyone scared to go fishing, swim, or take their kids or dogs out to the lake...

It turned out to be a red bellied pacu

yep. mean little boogers. i had to tell my cousin that one fish was sleeping on the bottom when it was just its head. i felt so bad, but she'll never know.

I have 3 aquarium books and over 200 pages printed of a fish forum i used to go on. very complicated. PH, nitrites, nitrates, ammonia, water changes that always end in a wet floor, up to your elbowes in murky water....

sorry hedwig, but mine don't like coming to the surface except to hit it real fast and go hide. they hide alot. very weird to watch them "hunt". like wolves i tell ya. one gets the fish by the tail and the other close in. weird version of DEEP BLUE SEA:yikes: except in and aquarium. they are also hard to keep fed. i'm thinking about getting some mollies for my other aquarium. had luck with them having fry. save on buying all the feeders every week.

yep. in some parts they are banned, but a pet store near us has them. idiots dump them into streams and rivers. main reason african clawed frogs got banned.

People are bad for doing that around here.... so far a pacu, a full grown common pleco, and a alligator have been pulled out of the lake this year.

Electric Blue Johanni (Melanochromis Johanni) was first described by Eccles in 1973. It's also known as the Bluegray Mbuna.

So who are you, David Eccles or (the deceased) Ethelwynn Trewavas?

What genus exactly?
Ok Now I resent that. I have gone from the electric blues into a sharp neon electric blue. You have not seen them and I am done arguing fish. I know a lot more then a 19 year old really. Sorry AC but on this subject I am done. I really like you but this is a subject you and I have to agree to disagree. You chastised the op because she will allow fish to be beaten to death and went off on her and turned around and said you feed your fry to others lol how is it different ?

It's very different... there is a difference between the balance of life and throwing 17 fish in a 10 gallon tank. I only feed my fry to the others if I haven't got the room to deal with a 25+ brood of fry, and that doesn't happen often. Hedwig put all these fish into his tank because s/he wanted to.

So, I cull fry. I'm not cross breeding pure lines to come up with hybrids like you are. I don't cull babies because they don't fit a line I came up with out of the blue.

I know many, MANY cichlid keepers that would consider your "breeding and raising" a joke. I consider it a slap in the face, because it is people like you that will be the end of African cichlids.

Where did I say I am doing it to sell ?
Where did I say I am doing it other then hobby ?
Yes some of the pet stores have taken in my broods and I found it to cost me more money then I made and no longer care to even own fish.. I wish you were close enough to take all these tanks. I so anm sick and tired of fish and I am not messing up the species. You need to go take a chill pill AC it is not that big a thing to get worked up about and as I said several times I do not do the Cichlids that you have I have gone out of it. I do not own any more Johannies I gave them to a breeder. It is in his capable hands now. My severums are breeding too as are the Discus but I do not sell I kill !!!!!

As for cross breeding no I do not ! they are pure just color improved and that you are getting from all breeders or you can get wild ones who have far less color

The new strain is a cross, with marbles. They are in the 3rd gen and showing some good color . Getting better. She feeds the red zebras to the clown knife and the turtles.

'Nuff said.

-------------------------------------

Edited to add:

I know you don't deal with them anymore, Aussie. I know you gave them all away. I apologize if I made it seem like I am mad at you, but I'm not.

I'm just angry at the fact that I am considered a "fish snob" for telling someone that their fish will end up as food. I try to help someone, and I get bitched at, told that I am "up my own ass" and laughed at. I consider it an insult to my intelligence, because in the field of fish (not only cichlids, mind you), I am a very educated person. I take alot of my personal time to study, read, take pictures of, and write caresheets and articles on fish. I know you didn't say all of the above, though.

When someone doesn't take my advice, and basically tells me I know nothing, I get angry. Just like with dogs, I am passionate about fish, and if getting nasty means that Hedwig will look back at this and say "Hey-- maybe she is right" or "Hey-- I should have listened to her...", then so be it.

Alright AC, I was going to stay out of this but your little "FISH SNOBS ARE US " by your avatar, Thing p!sses me off. Someone who is so quick to be a Know it all and only has one cheap a$$ tank sitting on top of a dresser with cheap ass whisper filters on it . You know everything. You are always rude when we discuss fish on this forum. Keep talking publicaly about how you buy and sell, It WILL BITE YOU IN THE A$$ AND YOU KNOW WHAT I MEAN!

Well who's the know it all?

That tank was expensive (200 for a 55 gallon), the filter was expensive, cost me close to 80 bucks for the filter alone. Costed me about $500 (could be more, will have to ask the Money Maker) bucks to set up... sorry, but unlike y'all, there a a few people in this world who has to stop spending somewhere.

By the way, it's not a whisper, if you look closely, that is a Emp 400 Bio-Wheel.

And yes, I buy and sell fish. I am a cichlid BREEDER. It's what I do.

this thread has gone completly off course..
the point of the matter is, for an inexperienced fish keeper, this 10gallon tank is severly overstocked with fish that often have large issues with eachother...

unfortunatly as ive said MOST petstore employees are there for a paycheque, the few with any common knoledge whatsoever are squeltered because it could mean they sell less fish...sad but true.

in the hands of a very experienced fish keeper in the right setup all these fish could happily cohabitate, and the paramiters be kept normals and safe, but unfortunatly as is obvious Hedwig is indeed a beginner, and for begginers its NEVER advised to overstock a tank or simply take "pet stroe employee advice"

i realy do suggest you get rid of the bonitas, and DONT add anythign else...
Hopefully you havent shocked they system too much as to send it in a spiral and kill the fish...and keep a close eye on the redtail and the gouramies, both are highly known to become agressive as they mature!

AC i simply took the pet shops advice because i can see him, talk to him in person, and he seemed very experienced in fish keeping.

not to be rude this time but who are you likely to trust, however silly it seems now, someone on the internet whom you have never met or an supposedly exp fish keeper at the shops, according to him, i can still have more fish and they should all get one great.

then i come back here and find out it was the opposite thing i shjould of done.

im flaming sorry ok! i trusted someone i shouldnt of! you asume you can trust them, being a beginer i had no idea i shouldnt of! you were just a hand full of people who had a bad experience to me!

as the fish seem to be doing ok for now i will keep things as they are! first sign of trouble from any i will rehome.

I WAS NIEVE! N-I-E-V-E! FOR GODS SAKE! i was wrong and should of taken advice i no!

but i will not say sorry for what i have said in the past!!!

You don't have to apologize. I understand that I seem like a bitch 9 times out of 10, and I'll agree, I am.

All I ask is to be taken seriously. Next time you decide to buy fish, do some research. Read, take in as much info as you can. Learn.

That is all I ask, my friend :)
