I took Chaz, my Alaskan Malamute, for a walk last evening. As we were walking by the house on the corner, I saw this Rottweiller trying to jump the fence. This dog attacked Chaz once before, so I was obviously apprehensive. The owner came out to bring him inside so I thought "no problem". Still to be safe I crossed to the other side of the street to get off his territory. Then, out of nowhere, this dog is charging across the street. He attacks Chaz and Chaz tries to run but, of course, I'm still hanging on to the leash. He chomps down on his back and starts shaking his head.
I did something that I have never done in my life and, that is, "I layed the boots to this dogs ribs". It took 3 or 4 kicks before it let go and he went to hide behind his owner. I also had a thought, at that time, that I have never had. I wanted to kill that dog.
Anyways, Chaz was checked out and he's OK, although sore. For the first time in 3 years he wasn't howling at me to take him for a walk this morning. We'll go tomorrow.
I was amazed at how quickly it happened and I had no idea what to do. My only instinct was to protect my dog. I figured that I had a better chance against a 100# dog than Chaz did.
So today, I found a report on Dog Attack Prevention. It's free, so I thought I'd share it with any Chazhounders who are interested. Click this link and you can download it http://www.dogdaypets.com/dogattack.html

I walk my boxer up my road everyday and there are lots of otehr dogs on the street who bark out a greeting. Roxy doesnt bark back unless I tell her its okay to say hello or if she gets really excited. But there is a certain golden retriver who snarls and runs to the end of his chain so that it almost snaps and tries to lunge at us even though we go to the other side of the street. today his owner came out and laughed when he saw what was happening. needless to say I was pi$$ed off. his dog is trying to get off its chain to attack (i have no doubts about that one) my dog and hes laughing because his dog is probably 50 pounds bigger?? I am almost to the point of filing a complaint with someone becuase we can hear the dog barking down the road at other dogs (its not only mine apparently) Im just worried because if he ever got off his chain and attacked roxy i couldnt defend her or myself (im 7 months pregnant) I think im going to start carying dog mace with me out of fear...on my own street!!!! it sickens me that people cant control there animals.

Exactly, these people that want a "tough" dog. It goes to show you that dogs do mimic there owners. If the owner's an idiot, the dog will be too.

well my boxer loves looking tough she has a spiked collar..my bf thought it would be cute. But we only put it on her with supervision..she likes to jump on people and I dont want anyone getting a spike in the eye! but we also keep her very very close to us on a leash when we walk her because people are afraid of her. they assume becuase she is a boxer..alot mistake her with pitbull somehow...probably just becuase she has a docked tail...well people assume she is dangerous. We always smile at people though when they look worried and not in a creepy my dog wants to eat you way. Alot of people put to much time in making there dogs act tough. If they are a rott or a boxer or a pitt they are on auto gard all the time! well most dogs are but I find these breeds really need to learn to act around people! and the owners need to act to control there dogs!

A dog once tried to attack me but my Rottie/Shepherd put him in his place. I'm glad you made a report so the owners won't make another mistake that could possibly be deadly.

yeah, mum always told us, if a dog combs at you and your walking the dogs, let them go, they will sort it out.

Once a ACD came at us, I let sophie go and started to run with buz at the time he was just a pup, grace turned to run and ran into a pole, fell on the ground, this dog started to lunge at her, Sophie, good on her, jumped in front of grace and the dog turned tail and ran. But fair enough for kicking that dog. It proabbaly needed a good boot.

I would never let my dog off the leash to fight. That's just stupid to let them get into a fight, IMO. I'd hold on and yell at the dog to "GO HOME!" I would let my dogs snap and snarl at the attacker to scare it off, though.
