We have seen some wonderful results of stinky smelly dogs in dietary change either to a raw home prepared (requires research) or switch to Natura's California Natural's. California Natural's is a premium food with fewer ingredients to help a dog cleanse their system. After being on that food for a few months switch to Innova, EVO or another of the foods they offer. It could be food intolerance that your dog is suffering from, so a food like California Natural is a good food to try for a trial period.
If your dog is suffering from a yeast infection remove any sources of yeast as well as sugar from the diet ( I do believe Kibbles and Bits is high in sugar frucose/glucose). Check labels on treats for corn syrup or other sources of sugar. Feed either organic natural Yogurt daily or give probiotics. Check for underlying allergies that can cause chronic yeast problems (my female never gets yeast infections and she is intact). 1 fish capsule per 10-15 pounds of body weight daily can help.
You could also add some Antioxidants to your dogs diet...don't over do it though.
Some thing else to look into is Vitamin A which suppreses overactive skin glands (called sebascaceous glands), a disorder that leads to crusts and scales and smelly skin. Vitamin A should not be preformed retinol...do research on Vitamin A and discuss with your Vet. Cod Liver oil is a good source of Vitamin A, just be careful as you can overdose on Vitamin A. This is something you should talk to a professional with before starting...find out dosages etc.
I have heard of people using Zinc for skin disorders as well.
For some herbs that may be helpful (and I have used in the past) are Astragalus to support the immune system and as an anti-inflammatory.
Evening Primrose Oil a good source of fatty acids.
There are many other supplements I could suggest for cleansing the system etc. But, these are best done under the supervision of a holistic Vet.
Personally myself I use a partial raw food diet (for my problem prone Newf - Lamb, venison), Quality kibble & canned. For supplements I add daily ground organic flax seed, organic plain yogurt, glucosamine supplement, Astragalus, bilberry, dandelion root. Every few days or a few times a week I give her Fish oil, sardines, Evening primrose oil, milk thistle (cleansing tonic - get expert advise first), slippery elm bark, wheat germ (for natural vitamin E), I also give them yogurt with mixed berries for Vitamin C, alfalfa (not consistantly), kelp. I have a variety of herbs I give, but, not daily. It works for my dogs, but, may not work for every dog...you should have some one who knows your dog to advise you.
I highly recommend you speak with a homeopathic Vet for advise on healing your dog from the inside out. I found in the past with myself and others using conventional methods sometimes they only mask the actual problem instead of healing the problem. I had so many problems with stinky skin and other problems with my older Newf...the Vets would prescribe antibiotics, switch her to a hypo allergenic food, we would bath her in special medicated shampoos...and the problem would go away, for awhile then come back either in a small way or worse.
Once we switched to a diet of high quality food and partial raw food diet with supplements she cleared up, her skin and coat are fantastic and smells wonderful and the problem has never been back. I also have a female Newf (that carries A LOT of coat, that is still intact, she never stinks during her heat cycles)...
Always get expert advise. I highly recommend you find a holistic Vet in your area.
