I'm not sure if this'll work or not but I wanted to show a pic of my soon to be nine year old pitbull. He was adopted last year from an old friend and has become a huge part of the family. He's not very well trained, he's very dog aggressive with other males and anything small and fluffy and has huge drive. I really wish I'd had him since a pup. His former owner didn't have the time for proper training. A question to go along with the post would be; how much success do you trainers think I'll have with him. After a year, he's just starting to figure out that pulling on the leash is not his best option.

Great looking old man :)

At 9 years old... the old cliche "Can't train an old dog new tricks" isn't completely true IMHO but it definately makes things harder. As he gets older his dog aggression should lessen some but at this point will always be there. With lots of obidence work you might get him to restrain himself while you are around but I (once again my opinion) don't think you'll ever be able to go to the dog park or trust him a lone with other animals.

Some obedience work is good for him but beyond that I would except him for who is and enjoy him. Just becare with him.

Thanks. I don't really do him justice with the camera. He's tough to get the lighting right because of the contrast of his colouration -**** piebald-. I'm also a lousy photographer.

Some obedience work is good for him but beyond that I would except him for who is and enjoy him. Just be carefull with him.
Well that makes me feel a little better. I didn't really feel like being real hard on him at his age, he had a hard enough life leading up to now. Like I said, he took so long to just get to walk decently on the leash. I mean things that took my chesapeake/lab x five days to learn he still won't grasp (and I do believe won't, not doesn't) I'd never trust him at a dog park. I can have him around other dogs in a controlled setting but it's too stressful for me to look forward to it. Funny that as much as I love pitbulls, and have known so many over the years, I didn't have one of my own for some very clear reasons; soooooooo much responsibility.

Zeus (we actually call him Jesus because I always call him with, "Hey Zeus come here etc") appreciates the comments.

Good looking dog.

I dont think you'll be able to train him to be a nice dog in time he has left. But you can embrace his qualities and try to work around with them :) Nothing wrong with having an aggressive dog, just have to be on guard at all times :) I know how that is.

As long as he's good with humans, thats all that matters, just make sure to have him in control at all times and look out for the other owners. Most owners think all dogs are fluffy angels which is very dangerous.

As am staffer said obedience work never hurt anyone :) It'll help you bond with him better. But dont expect him to win obedience titles, in 9 years his temeperament is rock solid and I doubt you'd get him to like other dogs.

good luck!

I just wanted to add that he's alright and even good with females that are around his size or bigger. I've got a friend that has a large female pit/X? and she was just plain mean to him and he didn't get mad, he'd just let her snarl and snap and then wait for her to calm down and play. She'd play for a bit then go full aggression and he'd jump back out of the fray and wait again. He also plays well with a friends female boxer and another friends female american bulldog. I get thinking he's good with females and then he goes off on a female lab that just gave him a slight growl. Thoughts?
