My family and I have been looking in to adopting this particular dog which currently has mange. The adoption place told us he wouldn't be ready until his treatment is over which would be another 2 weeks from today....... I'm curious if anybody has dealt with mange here? Is this something to worry about? Will the treatment cure the problem 100%..... the last thing we need is for our dog as well as the new dog to both have it. What are your thoughts?

It depends on what type of mange it is. Demodex, or demodectic mange, is very hard to get rid of. I forget what the other type is called, but it's easier to deal with. But if they think the dog will be ready in 2 weeks, I'm going to say it's not demodex.

Just make absolutly certain the treatments worked before bringing the dog home. It is contagious.

I haven't personally dealt with mange, and from the sound of it, I never want to.

How effective is the treatment? Does it normally work out? and how can I assure it's been rectified?

Thanks!

sarcoptic is the other mange. IT IS BAD!! (it can transfer to humans and is called scabies) I just finished a treatment for demodetic mange with Thor. Started almost 3 months ago. And the vet said that it could flair back up at any time :(

They will do a skin scrapping test where they scrape the skin, put it under the micro-scope, and look for mites.

NO, it is not bad. I would make sure that it is not sarcoptic mange, though. And if it is, I would take them to the vet and have the vet make sure that it is gone.

I tried calling the shelter but haven' received a call back yet (go figure).

Anyhow, this is what was said on the petfinder listing:

He weighs almost 4 pounds and will be neutered when he is well enough and prior to his adoption.Guiseppe is a sweet little guy who incurred mange and was abandoned, ending up in the pound. Unfortunately, most people will not spend a cent for vet care. He is now being treated for contagious mange and, thankfully, he is no longer itches constantly. His treatment is kicking in but he still is somewhat uncomfortable. He should be totally recovered by the beginning of June

So to me it sounds like the contagious type?

Sarcoptic Mange is the contagious type of mange. It will make people really itchy but it cannot reproduce on people because we aren't the natural host and the mites cannot burrow into our skin to lay their eggs. Demodex mange is the non-contagious mange. Demodex is transferred from mom dogs to puppies. All dogs have Demodex mites. The demodex causes problems when the immune system is unable to handle them due to illnesses or malnutrition or if the dog just has a weaker immune system. I don't know why they are saying the Sarcoptic will be treated in two weeks...it usually takes longer than that for the Mange to be treated completely, unless the dog had a mild case. Once the dog's treatment is complete, you probably won't have any flare-ups afterwards as long as you are giving the proper care (and probably a few medicated baths). Just make sure you keep that dog seperated from any other pets until you are SURE the mange is no longer problem.

Congrats on your adoption. The dog may be a little patchy looking when you get him but since the dog won't be raking at his skin anymore he'll have a beautiful coat grow out in no time :D

I adopted a lab border collie that had pretty bad mange. He had just started growing hair back when we got him but 5 months later and a healthy diet and some TLC he has a beautiful coat but we still have a small scar under one of his eyes to remind us of his bad start in life. We took him to the vet (who was also the vet treating him) and it hasn't come back at all.

Bubba picked up sarcoptic mange in Canada one year. YEs, I took him to a dermatologist who did the ear tip scraping. Because he had been in contact with daughters' dogs , I got meds for all . It cleared up quickly and we never had any problems of recurrence . I'd go with him !!
