Why do you need a breakstick if your not fighting your dogs?
Being the responsible multiple pit and dog owner that Miakoda is, it would be reckless for him/her (sorry I don't read enough posts to know what gender you are) to not have breaksticks ready incase a fight should breakout between his/her dogs. Due to the style in which pitties inflict their bites (grab and hold) and because of how powerful their grip is ( no they don't have lock jaws) breaksticks are a nessicary tool that all pit owners should own incase their dogs should start a fight with another dog in their house. Breaksticks are inserted in the mouth and are used to essentially lodge two dogs off each other.
Which considering their natural tendancies towards dog aggression, owners should always be expecting it to happen and be prepared to deal with it if it should arrise. Though being prepared if you own multiple dogs, regardless of sex applies for non- pit, owners as well and every multiple dog household should have plans for what to do if a dog fight should occur.
The only reason most other breed dog owners do not carry break sticks is because most breeds tend to snap and lash out when fighting another dog ,increasing the risk of you being bitten and rendering a break stick useless.
I think the article has good intentions, and I believe it's important that people realise how commong dog fighting is everywhere, even in their own city. However I do think to some extents it misportrays dog fighters, as all of the conditioning items used by trainers are also commonly used by responibly owners. The only difference is responsible owners besides not intending to fight their dogs, are not going to be as secretive and as such are more likely to have a neighbour call in on them to the AC in that area and possibly have their dogs taken away for owning "dog fighting paraphenillia".
None the less real dog fighting is a disgusting and sad reality even today, however I feel that article while trying to bring to light a very serious situation does nothing more then to possibly bring a few responsible owners under fire from ignorant and misinformed neighbours.
