LOST question

ok so tonights episode was the one where we see hurley's past(series one) and is all about the numbers and how the french woman heard them too.
im totally going mad here so if anyone wants to give me some clues or info to help me understand...

He thinks the numbers are bad because they were on his lottery ticket and the lottery ticket gave him bad luck. The same numbers are on the hatch that they find. They finally get inside the hatch and inside the hatch is a man named Desmond, whom Jack met a few years before (you'll see a flashback in a couple of episodes). Every 108 minutes he types in the numbers, otherwise something bad will happening, only he doesn't know what.
