hi ok my pup is doing good with paper training and i was wondering if this would be the right way and a smooth transition to litter box training.

every few days as long as he is making it on the paper 98% of the time i am removing a section of paper from the area he is in.
when i see him go on the paper he gets tons of praise and i mean tons and crazy petting im surprised he doesn't pee again from getting so excited lol.
as soon as i am down to one piece of paper i was going to put out the litter box or should i do it sooner as a second option?
when i put it out i would move the piece of paper in the box when he gets used to that i thought i would add yesterdays news cat litter in to get used to the feel and eventually take out the paper.

does that sound good or is there a better way??

What do you mean when you put it out? where are you going to put it?

If I understand you correctly... it seems that you have the right idea.

Is there a reason you want to use litter? Most dogs would rather go on the paper although you can put the paper in the box to prevent spraying with a boy.

I know plenty of dogs do well with litter too, so if you want to try it thats fine just something to think about.

Plus if your already training with the paper it may be easier to stick with it.

lol the "litter" i am going to use is called yesterdays news so it is newspaper pellets that way if he decided to eat it for some reason it wont hurt him.

and i mean put it out as in i haven't introduced the litter box to him yet so i was going to put the box out beside where he goes so he can explore and start to place him in there when i see him look like he needs to go.

i would put the box down now, and when he starts looking to go potty put him in the box, if he hops out, put him back and tell him go potty...repeat untill he does and praise like crazy...
doing it this way will mean no need to retrain him to get into the box later esentially skipping a step lol.

ive not had much luck with litter with our chis, they don tlike the feel of it under foot so we use a wee wee pad in the "litterbox" and they have no problem with it :)

If you want indoor potty training , I'd stick to the paper ...you don't want to travel with a litter box ! I hate the smells of them anyway !

Oh I got you... I dont know why I thought you meant outside... I couldnt grasp why you would put a litterbox outside

Okay, yes like Foxy said I would put it out now... easiest to introduce something to dog as a baby.

I know the litter you mean... if the dog takes to it, it will be fine... just wanted you to be prepared that many dogs dont take to the litter... in that case just line the litter box with a wee wee pad... easier clean up to!

ok i will go by one tomorrow and i see what your saying bubbatd about traveling with it but other people might be more receptive to the idea of him peeing in the box vs. their floor.

its worth a try anyways and i just figured that litter cause it is safer and it is still newspaper so it would smell the same and be easy for him to know to go in it.

are you using newspaper right now?

You should try wee wee pads they have ones with a scent in them to attract the dog to go on them.
