i dont get how you can let your intact rottweiler in the same room as your saluki bitch in heat, and then even consider breeding these dogs,
i'm not saying these dogs have any faults but i believe in only responsible people should be able to breed dogs and leaving two dogs together when one is intact and the other in heat when they are different breeds, is completely irreponsible, so for your dogs sake, i hope you spay/neuter them

and btw leaving them together for feeding or whatever reasons you mention may be more dangerous then you though, because if he starts mating with her and they get in a tie, if you trie to seperate them, you may cause harm to both of them

You have some beautiful dogs!

Please understand we're not trying to be overly harsh here; it's all out of concern for the well-being of your dogs. Neither of your furkids are ready to be bred, and the combination of a young, fine-boned Saluki with an already impressively sized Rottie could have dire, if not fatal consequences. Males can be very persistant, to the point of jumping through glass windows or digging through drywall to get to a female in heat. Ask around the board and listen to some the stories from others who have "been there, done that!" :)

It is possible to keep two opposites intact around each other, but it takes an incredible amount of diligence and coordination, the extent of which most people (probably including myself, but I've never tried) don't possess.

It's up to you which of your dogs you want to keep intact, there are massive pros and cons to each. Spaying your Saluki girl will mean you don't have to worry about mammary cancer, pyometra and just the mess that go along with heats.

Neutering your male will ensure that he doesn't try to bust out of your house to get to other females in heat (they can smell them up to like 2 miles away). It will also increase your chances of having a managable Rottie, as intact male Rotties can be a force of nature in and of themselves. It takes a firm but loving hand and LOTS of training. Also, it will prevent testicular/prostate cancer.

Good luck!

Neuter your male instead of boarding him. Boarding puts him at risk for kennel cough and other issues. If you are not planning on showing him then you are not taking any anvenues to find out if he will be a fit stud dog. Showing, health screens and advertising are all very expensive for stud dogs. Responsible breeders will only be interested in him if he has proven himself. Otherwise, you will just get BYB's chasing after him.

I think, for your peace of mind and that of the dogs, you should neuter one of them. Even if it's not a problem now, it could be later. Boarding the male every time the bitch goes into heat will be stressful on him, keeping them apart will be stressful on you, and if they ever do manage to get together it could spell trouble, with the male being such a large breed and the female such a slender one.

Thank you all, especially Zoom,

I appreciate all your concern and have taken your advice to seperate them. Ajab the Saluki is now at my parents house, she has a nice garden and kids to play with, Saluma the Rott looks quite sad though...

I have taken everyones suggestion on board however I will make the decision to spay/neuter in her next heat. I do have my reasons not to spay/neuter immediately, some of which you may or may not agree with but I dont want to clutter the forum with my quite specific circumstances here, on the whole I completely agree that spaying/neutering is generally the best and I have S/N my previous dogs and bitch (1 Doberman, 1 lurcher and 1 saluki)

thank you all for taking the time to share your thoughts!

Regards,

I think it would have been a better choice for you to take the Rottie to your moms house instead of the bitch. There is no one better equipped to watch a bitch in heat than the owner. Someone else will not be so vigilent.

BTW I'd neuter the Rottie first, if you have no intentions of showing or working him. I'd assume you dont since your first posts you said 'If he proves himself a good stud'. On the other hand you said that you are/will be coursing the Saluki?

This can be a promising dog, and if she were mine i'd hold off on the spay. If she turns out not being a good courser then i'd spay. Good luck!!
