How do I go about becoming a Junior Handler? I'd really like to learn more about it...do you have to show your own dogs? (Of course, that would be a slight problem...x.x)

Anyone with info is appreciated. :)

I started out as a Junior Handler at 9 yrs old. It's fun and challenging, but is much more "cut throat" than it was in my day (the late 70s). It's a huge competition nowadays, but back then we were lucky to have 10 Jrs total at a large show. Now there are 10+ entries in each classification (Novice and Open) in all three age groups!

According to AKC regulations, the dog must be owned by the junior, a member of the child's family or household. My cousin co-owns the dog that she shows with the breeder, although it doesn't live at her home.

Unless you find a breeder who will put your name on the dog, like they did with my cousin. She trains the dog and shows it, but it lives elsewhere. Kind of like an apprenticeship. It would take some shopping, probably a breeder with lots of dogs. (My cousin is showing a Sheltie).

Hmm...maybe I could try that. I just don't have the vaguest idea on how to go about doing it!

When I was reading about it on the AKC page, it said that they judged based on how well they handle the dogs, I think? I may be wrong. In the UK it might be different anyway...

AKC says the dog has to be eligible for conformation or obedience, so it doesn't matter the quality, just how well you present them.
