Jake couldn't take it anymore.

Well, the King visiting the neighbor's yard saga has become something more than just kind of a hassle.

He went over there on Friday, and Jake was there, as usual, sulking, and looking like King is the most disgusting piece of garbage ever born. I'm not far behind King, as far as Jake is concerned. Funny how a dog that came over to the fence to see me every morning for two years, can hate me as much as he does. I let him slide when he bit me a few months ago, but I don't even say anything except "Hey Jake" when I go into the yard next door to get King and bring him home. He usually won't even look at me for more than a second or so, before he turns away in disgust. He looks nauseated when I talk to him.


Today, Tasha, who King really likes to play with, was out in the yard. She's been acting "old" lately, and hasn't been coming outside much. They had her checked out at the vet, and he can't find a thing wrong with her. Anyway, she comes out as King goes over the fence, and King runs over to her, whining and his tail is wagging like crazy. I get the leash, and start over there. Just as I walk out the garage door, I see Jake start to charge.

He crashes into King and off they go! Since they are almost the same size and weight, it's a pretty even fight. Jake got a bite on King's face, but at the end, King had Jake pinned on his back. The neighbor ran out of her house and dragged Jake away, or tried to, he got loose, and again wound up on his back. This time, he had enough, and King let him up, and then ran over to Tasha, kissed her, and gave a stare at Jake, who looked like he was about to puke. King walked over to him, and he turned away. This must have made King a happy guy, he ran around the yard a couple of times, peed several times and did all kinds of kicking dirt and dancing.

Jake sat and sulked while I put King on the leash. Since King is almost 9, and Jake isn't quite 5 yet, time is on Jake's side, if Jake wants to keep the feud going. So now I have to worry about King jumping over the fence and possibly getting loose if the gate is open, about him fighting with Jake, and about going into the neighbors house and peeing on something, and getting into it with Jake in Jake's own house.

Well, it appears that Jake, at least for the meantime, has decided to go back to sulking and doesn't seem to want to start it up again, as King has jumped the fence every day when I come home from work without triggering an attack from Jake. He just avoids looking at King, and looks at me instead, for a few seconds, then turns away in disgust again.

King went into the house yesterday and went inside the house for a few minutes. They were eating, and gave King a hunk of burger, his favorite, and then walked him out to me. He was a very happy guy. Jake followed behind, looking like he was about to lose his lunch.

At this point, I'm about to suggest we just take part of the fence down to save King's joints. He's no pup anymore. :lol-sign:

I think I would go the opposite way and RAISE the fence...it's not fair to Jake to have to worry about a dog he hates coming into his yard whenever he wants and knowing that he can't beat him. And it's not going to be fair to King if one day he does end up getting too slow and Jake takes a hunk out of him.

Well, right now, it's a matter of money. I really can't afford to do it now, and soon it will be too cold to do it when/if I can. I can't expect the neighbors to eat the entire costs of it, and right now, that's what they would have to do.

We talked a little last week, and they might try to talk their daughter into taking Jake, he gets along great with her dog, and just keep the two others.
King will still probably be jumping the fence, but without Jake, all will be peaceful.

We will see.

Maybe I don't know the entire story, but King is your dog? Jake is your neighbors dog? Your dog is jumping over the fence entering into your neighbors yard and fighting with your neighbors dog?

It's a long story, but my dog King, has recently been going over the fence into the neighbor's yard, not to fight, but to visit the two dogs he likes, and the people next door too. He has gone into their house several times through the doggy door, and actually gotten in bed with the woman and one of the daughters to cuddle a couple of times! When they moved in, one of their dogs, Tasha, jumped the fence into my yard several times a day, and King and her liked to play, and got along fine. Jake was a pup they found living near a construction site, he was about 8 months old. He's about 4 now.

Recently, they added another dog, Joey to the pack, and King decided at age 8+, to start visiting them, as Tasha can't, or won't come over anymore. Jake used to be very friendly, to me and to King, but as of about a year ago, he changed his attitude after King and Tasha were playing together in front of him and he attacked King, who doesn't want to start anything, but is happy to fight with Jake, if he starts it, and every so often, he can't seem to take it anymore, and he goes after King.

All King wants to do is visit, and play, Jake at best sits and stews, and if Tasha and King get together, he sometimes can't control his impulses very well, and attacks King.

I think that you are humanizing the dogs emotions. Dogs don't sit and stew, plot and then attack. Jake is attacking King plain and simple because of territory, whether that be the actual property or Tasha. And King is the one who is invading the property and attacking Jake at his own home.

Personally, if a dog ever came on to my property and got into a fight with one of my dogs- regardless of who started the fight, the other dogs owners would have hell to pay!

Well, luckily for me, I guess, my neighbors are reasonable about King's visitations. We are pretty friendly with each other, being almost exactly the same ages, and growing up in the same area. We are trying to figure out how to keep King from going over the fence, but so far, all attempts have been total failures, if he can't jump, he climbs, and he climbs really well..

They aren't helping the whole situation by smootching with him in bed when he comes into the house some mornings, and they feed him treats too. We agreed that the treats should be stopped, but so far, the cuddling in bed has continued, if not wiith the parents, then with one of the 4 kids still at home. Jake has no problem with that it seems, he doesn't even follow him upstairs most of the time..

Tasha is the key to the whole deal, no doubt.

(shakes head...) I guess it is lucky for you. I hardly think that many other neighbors would be so calm and relaxed when a loose dog comes into their yaed and attacks one of their resident dogs. King should be supervised at all times when he goes outside, IMO, because it is awful that Jake has to deal with a bully like King coming into his yard and fighting him. I also have friends that also have dogs, some of our dogs don't get along with their dogs- WE NEVER ALLOW THE SITUATION TO GET OUT OF CONTROL. If you can't afford proper fencing, can you afford the vet bills that may come from a nasty dog fight?

King is your dog, you have to accept the responsibility instead of blaming your neighbors, which by the way I agree that they aren't helping the problem, but in the end when one of the dogs needs to be vetted due to injury- it is your dog fighting on another property making you liable.

You seem to be confused. King is NOT attacking anyone. Jake is attacking King. Most of the time, King totally ignores Jake, except if Jake makes a move as if he's approaching to attack. He will glare at Jake, who 99% of the time backs down. All King wants to do is visit and play with Tasha, Joey (Joey isn't much for playing with King, he's too rough, but Tasha loves it), and the people who live next door. King has never attacked Jake, period. He does defend himself when Jake attacks him. None of the half dozen mix ups they have had have caused anything but very minor injuries to both dogs. Actually the last time was the first injury we found on either dog.

We are going to do something about the fence, but we haven't decided what and how to pay for it. We don't have a lot of time before winter hits and that will take it into until next spring.

This thing with Jake is simply a "harem" issue, he's jealous of King playing with Tasha and his jealousy overrides his senses, and off he goes. Why it took him about 2 and a half years to get upset about it is the real mystery.
