I have been toying with the idea of getting an invisible fence for our backyard. We rent so I can't put up a real fence. Do you think it would be worth the money or should I just keep working on boundry training with Gunnar? Everything I read says that you HAVE to have a fence for your GSD, would this be the next best thing?
The only time he is out unsupervised is when he is out for a potty break. Currently he is kept on a tie out. When offleash is he is resonably good about staying in the yard but if an animal runs by he gives chase. I wonder if an invisible fence would stop him. Also does anyone know if you can use one on a four-month-old puppy?

My neighbors have an invisible fence and it works awesome. I would love to get one, but I also rent and I think they are expensive. I don't know if you can dig it up either and take it with you. I wouldn't think so, but I know very little about the, except that I want one. I am trying to teach mu 4 month old puppy to stay in the yard. There are dogs all over the place including two next door. There aren't any fences and it has become really difficult. I have much empathy for you.

Just remember that an invisible fence doesn't always work for every dog and it also doesn't stop other dogs from entering onto your property. This is why I personally like having a fence.

I'd stick with the boundary training. There's no substitute for good, thorough training. I consider the invisible fence to be a temporary solution while the actual underlying problem is solved. And many dogs will go right through an invisible fence if there's something to chase, especially a GSD. You can get one, but I would only recommend it as an absolute last resort. Training is better!! :)

Ya we used to use one, worked good but our big Weimeraner got past it a few times.
After a while it broke and we had to save up for a fence.

The shock mechanism is actually in the collar that the dog has to wear. If for some reason the collar comes off, the dog can walk past the invisible fencing without a problem. Only the animal wearing the collar is affected.

Depending on the dog, It might not even phase him. I've seen dogs charge through those fences like it was joke. I've tried some of these shock collars on myself. Yea, they do hurt but its sorta entertaining to ask your friend to put it on than shock him. Normally makes them want to hit you but all you got to do is press that little button and their hands will be at their necks. lol

We have friends with Goldens... (not even close to a GSD) the invisible fence worked so well at house #1, that when they moved in to house #2 all they had to do was put in the little boundary flags. :D

We have one, our Border Collie has gone through it several times but our Lab mix has only gone through the boundary once. All breakthroughs were due to chasing a cat in the woods behind our house. And other animals can come in the yard, obviously because they don't have the collar on. I never leave the dogs unattended in the yard, there is always someone outside when they are.

I've never used one. I'm not completely against them, but my dogs have high prey drive and would shoot through one to get to something.
