I just lost my five month old Great Pyrenese pup Koda Bear to a
horrible death. One that could have been prevented and that makes it
so much harder. Like most puppies he loved to chew,on just about
anything. And like most puppies he also liked to dig. We had a bed
of irises which of course were planted not far under the surface iof
the ground. He didn't have to dig far before he uprooted them. I
guess he liked the texture of the root because he chewed and
obviously ingested some of the root. He started vomiting later that
evening. At first I didn't connect the vomiting to the iris root.
Over the next day and a half he got progressively worse. We took him
to the vet where he was immediatly placed on IV fluids. The vet did
everything he could but it was in vain. My precious, happy Koda Bear
died during the third night at the vet.The iris root had caused the
lining of his intestines to slough off,his kidneys to shut down, and
his liver to hemorage. He died horribly.

I had no idea that these plants would do this to my dog. It kills me
that I could have prevented his death. I can't rewind time and save
my Koda Bear so I am putting this out in the hopes that some elses
dog won't suffer the same fate.

Here is a link to a good site that will give you a list of plants
that are toxic to dogs.

If you have these plants in your yard, please
make sure that your dogs can't get to them.

I am so very sorry to hear about Koda Bear. I know you wouldn't have had the plants around if you knew the danger. Koda Bear will always be with you in your heart and memories forever. Thank you for posting the website so that we may help prevent something from happening.

ohhh that must have been horrible!!!! :(

I am sure that you would have done everything in your power to make sure that Koda Bear did not get in the plants if you had know about it. :)

I know that it might be a little early but are you thinking about getting another dog???

R.I.P little Koda Bear!!!!! :(

Thank you everyone for your kind words. If I had only known what those plants could do. I have beat myself up with could haves, should haves, and what if's.

The breeder I got him from will have another litter that will be ready to be weaned in December. I cantacted the breeder and she gladly reserved a male puppy for me. The time frame will give me time to grieve for my Koda Bear. The pup will be a full brother to Koda Bear.

The Iris bed is completely gone. I no longer find any beauty in those flowers. Any plant that I want in the future will be thoroughly researched first.

Do not beat your self up over this you had NO way of knowing that would happen!!! :(

I am glad you are going to get another dog it will help with the pain that you are having right now!!! :)

That's really good that the breeder is willing to hold a male pup for you!!! :)

Good Luck with your new puppy!!!

Thank you.I have been in constant contact with the breeder as Koda Bear was growing up. She is a wonderful lady and she was in tears when I told her what had happened to Koda Bear. She didn't know about irses either. She had just got through planting a bunch in an edge area that the dogs would be able to reach. She went out and tore them all up as soon as I got off the phone with her.

I'm so sorry about your pup. Thank you for letting us know about the harmful plants--I had no idea about Irises either. Hang in there, I know this is tough.

I am so very sorry!:(

Thank you so much for sharing the info on the bulbs with us. I wasn't aware of it either.

You guys are welcome for the info and let me return thanks for all of your kind thoughts.I am glad I found this place, you all are a great bunch of people. An at least I don't hear from you guys "it was just a dog" like iI have heard from some people.

I almost know most all of us would NEVER say that!! :)

I am so sorry to hear about koda!

I have a ton of iris plants in my yard...Sawyer isn't a digger or a chewer by nature, and hasn't bothered them in the two iris seasons I've had him, but now I'm wondering if I should talk to my mom about moving the lines by the fence to the other side. :( I love these flowers too.
