I just purchased this seat belt harness for Buddy. I have a car and cannot fit a crate in the back seat. Today I tested it out and took him for a ride...he is not at all happy :( but I am sure he will get used to it. How do you secure your dog?

Honestly I don't. I've thought about the seat belts but Kota doesn't like to sit on the seat because she just barely fits and its not comfortable. She puts her paws on the floor inbetween our seats. So her head is right at my shoulder and her butt is on the seat. From there she can keep herself steady and she seems to be comfortable like that.

I'm bad ......I don't . All my Goldens have had free roam in the back of a station wagon , a Trooper and now Toyota 4Runner . They all have enjoyed the window too much . Taking chances , yes . If I ever had a small dog who wanted my lap etc . I would use a kennel or restraint .

Actually with this harness, they can still move around the seat and look out the window. That is why I liked this one, it gives him mobility.

I started to worry about if I got into an accident and he got thrown from the car or somehow got out. Now that I will be traveling far with him for our therapy sessions, I thought now was the time to take precautions.

I have used a seatbelt for Riley for years and he does great with it. He doesnt have to sit facing the front in his. He is too big to sit facing front in a car seat, so he sits sideways. I now have a hatchback that he rides in and lays down in the back with his seatbelt. Very comfortable.

I've seen the damage a slow moving impact does on a dog...after seeing dog brains on the windsheild of a mild 15mph collision I actually get mad when I see dogs loose. I've seen what happens in a collision with dogs on their owners lap, not pretty. I've seen the direct result of airbag damage on a dog.
Sometimes I wish I could show people some of the things I've seen.othertimes I wish I could forget...

That being said... My guys (both cresties) ride front passenger side, passenger front and side airbag off. They ride in a specially made carseat which is buckled in via seatbelt, they are secured to the rig via doggy seatbelt/car harness.

There's another thread with a picture of ruby in her seat in another reacent car thread.

It took ruby about a week to get used to wearing the car harness as opposed to her regular harness, but now she loves it. Jasper falls asleep lol.
The seat puts them right at window level so they can see out the side and front, they're also within arms reach for the occasional scritch.
And when others ride with me they can be moved into the back, and in other folks cars I can simply clip in the seatbelt attatchment and know there safe too.
I love it, I know there safe in a colision, they can't simply jump out of the car in an emergency, and there secure meaning they can't move about the car as a distraction.

I crate Jake. Just got him a new one and I put it together in the car so I had not trouble getting it to fit.

no room for big dog crates in my car, so seatbelt harnesses. They ride sideways as well and have no issues
