Well I just got my 11 week old American Eskimo 4 days ago. The breeder told me she would turn the lights off at 8pm and she would get up at 5am.

So far she has been right since the pup passes out around 8-9pm everynight. But I dont fall asleep till 12am. She wakes up at 6am and if I dont take her out she will go "oops" in her cage. But again, I dont wake up till around 9am.

Any way I can fix this? Or should i try to just keep her up as long as possible? But i know puppies sleep a lot.

Grr just upset she pooped in her crate and all over her new bed. But again im partly to blame as well since I sleep upstairs and her crate is downstairs. So i cant hear if she whines to want to go out. But rather fix her sleep schedule first.

I'd just do it gradually. Shift the bedtime back a few minutes at a time until she's comfortably staying up until you want. It may take a few weeks to move it back 3 hours if that's your goal. I wouldn't simply try to keep a dead tired dog awake for an extended time if she really wants to sleep though. Adjust it slowly.

But until she's sleeping as late as you want her to, you're just going to have to set an alarm or something to get up and let her out. I feel your pain. :)

Wake up earlier. You have a puppy, take on the responsibility!

Such a kind breeder--most of us have had puppies that wake up every couple of hours for the first few days that we have them. That's amazing that your girl sleeps from 8 to 6!

Well, it's kinda like having a baby- you would change your schedule to meet the baby's. You have a puppy and your pup- at 11 weeks- does not have the capabilities to hold her pee in her tiny little bladder for 8+ hours. You need to develop a schedule that fits HER needs.

I am sure it will take a good while to adjust puppies routine to fit into your lifestyle. So if you know puppy wants to poop at 5:00am, then just set your alarm and let puppy outside to relieve himself then you can go back to bed. If you gradually keep the pup up later then you can expect the 5:00am "scheduled poop" to gradually become later too. Just don't expect it to happen overnight. And since you actually have a pup that is used to a schedule, it should be very easy to prevent accidents and therefore prevent unwanted behaviours....... if you are deligent in giving your pup the time he needs for change, even if it means it is a pain in the butt for you....at least your pup will learn what is expected with hopefully no setbacks. ;)

For the record i wasnt asking for a quick fix. I knew this would take time.

Anywho I will just take her outside when she needs to go and then go back to bed. No biggie.

YES! That worked perfectly. I woke up at 4:30am... took her out. She did her thing and put her back in her crate. I went to sleep... woke up at 9am and took her out again. Same thing.

Not once she went in her crate! :hail:

Shes playing beside me now.
