My family's always had dogs, and last week I got my own. He's a 10 mo old terrier of some kind (looks exactly like a Jack Russell, but a little bigger.)

I don't understand how he can only eat 1 1/2 cups of kibble in the morning, but leave three or four piles of poop in the apartment while I'm gone. I've had him five days now and this has been happening every day I'm at work. Is it normal? Is he house trained or not?

What kind of kibble are you feeding him? Some may be too rich and causing him to go more often. Also, you may be feeding him to much, 1 1/2 cups seems a lot to me for a Jack Russell size puppy? I have 3 yorkies and a pekepoo all under 10lbs. and they only eat 2/3 cups a day, 1/3 in the a.m and 1/3 in the p.m.
If I put them out shortly after they eat both meals I very rarely come home to poop piles. I feed Merrick dry food with a little bit of wet because 2 of them have very little teeth.

I would definately monitor his eating schedule and crate him and take him out for potty breaks if possible. As suggested I would change the food.

no, your dog is not house trained. you need to work on your schedule, since he obviously has to "go" at times you aren't there. how long is he by himself?

I have a 13 mth Jack Russell and he is getting just under a cup a day. But I am also feeding him a premium food which doesn't require as much feeding as the cheaper stuff.

He's not a Jack Russell, he's just got that overall look. He's more the size and shape of a fox terrier, but without the snout.

I have to assume he is house trained because he hasn't gone while I'm home, only the days during the week when couldn't come to walk him.

The humane society told me to feed him 1 1/2 cups twice a day and gave me Science Diet for puppies, but they also said he doesn't have much growing left. So maybe I should start switching him to adult food.

Throw away the Science Diet! Go get some good premium food and feed the suggested amount for the suggested weight. Sounds like he is pooping out all the extra food! lol

I am just wondering the weight of your pup?

That is 3 cups of food a day.

My choc lab is around 90 lbs. and I feed him just a little more than that.

I hear Science diet is not very good food, perhaps that is some of the problem? That and I would guess you are overfeeding a little.

Since your pup doesn't seem to have a problem when you are home, maybe you should try to feed a very small amount in the morning and then give the remainder when you get home.

Julie.

First off, if your dog is only 10 months old, he isn't old enough to be dependable, even if he is mostly potty trained. I would try crating him while you are gone until he gets older.

Second, I have a 90lb BMD that I feed less per day, and he is young and active. I feed Innova, so that may be some of the reason for the disparity, but regardless, the three plus cups a day (I assume he does get some treats, too) is a lot of food running though his pipes. Mordy is the undisputed food expert here, and pretty much everywhere on the web. I found her web site and used it long before I found this one. (I am sure there are others that post here that would tell you the same.) Check out her web site for a ton of good information to help select a good premium food. It will take you a while to sift through, and find the good ones, because Mordy's site does not simply give a list of recomended foods.
