Ziva was diagnosed with this yesterday. We caught it suuuuuper early because I took her in when she refused breakfast. She's a food hound and missing a meal is extremely unusual.

At the ER vet she had explosive bloody diarrhea, though her blood results came back normal, indicating that she didn't officially meet the guidelines for HGE. The vet felt that she was going in that direction (PCV of 43%, HGE is 60%+), so we kept her there for injectable antibiotics, injectable cerenia, and SQ fluids all day and she was discharged last night with metronidazole.

She slept well last night and has only had a small amount of formed bloody poop, which they said is normal. She's starting to drink again, but still refusing food.

I figured I'd start a thread here to get more input on the recovery process from others who have been through this.

I've seen a number of cases of it over the years. Generally IME most dogs recover pretty quickly and uneventfully if you get on top of it (which you did). I had one dog for whom it just nagged on and on and took something like 2-3 weeks to fully recover, but generally after a day or two of supportive care you should start to see gradual steady improvement.

Thanks for your insight! She's still a little low, but I did offer a bit of food a few minutes ago and she ate all of it, so that's helping me feel more confident that she's going in the right direction.
