I don't doubt that some Danes would have the protective instincts as far as guarding. I'm not sure about the "send him down field for a bite" type of training. I really need to try Daisy out, she might surprise! I can also see some Danes being worked to the point where they can be successful with PP work, but it's going to be the exception I think.

I would think that the reasons the military wouldn't use Danes is because they really don't have the stamina like a GSD or similar dogs do. You know how they are- short bursts of activity followed by a nap. I can't see a Dane on patrol all day. The bite targeting part can be trained. A Dane could be trained to bite legs just like any other dog doing protection work. It isn't always the arm that is targeted.

The military has used Danes before, I couldn't tell you why they are not used anymore. Like I said above I think too many people underestimate their abilities. But I will agree with you that, in general, most Danes certainly wouldn't fit the mold for a PP dog. But I think most people forget that these dogs are working dogs.

I think it comes down to the individual dog in most cases though...Freckles for example, certainly breaks the mold of "typical dane"..she can go all day.. infact, she's just now napping for the first time today..takes a lot to tire her out! While Malakai, on the other hand, would much rather nap all day.

Cheza hates water, she goes in up to her kneecaps and.. that's about it.
She's one of the weird ones that is go go go all day as well though.

Whoa! Does your dane have blue eyes in real life? It looks pretty awesome. Does the standard allow for blue eyes?
