This post has to do with hunting. If you are opposed to hunting start another thread about it and Ill go there and argue with ya.

I just realized that Buckshot has been teaching me and I didnt even know it. I went on an antelope hunt this weekend and I couldnt bring my dog unfortunately, but he was there in spirit. I was driving my Pinz down a small trail in the brushy northwest of Colorado when a herd of antelope ran in front of me. By the time I got out, and set up they had covered quite a distance. They slowed down at a small hill top that the lazer range finder said was 378 yards. I singled one out that was alone so the bullet wouldnt hit anything else and then squeezed the trigger. I heard the bullet impact on meat, so I knew I had a hit. When I went over to where my target was, I lazed the Pinz to check. I didnt find any blood, I looked all around the area that I had shot and there was no trace of the antelope. After about half an hour I decided to change my search pattern into a large circle, like Buckshot does. As I was walking I caught a whiff of antelope. I didnt put it together at the time but I walked into the wind and found the antelope laying in the brush.

I have had hard to find kills before and relied strictly on eyes and ears to find them, checking for blood, hair and tracks. Buckshot has been eating like a king since I got back, I am so glad he prefers the parts I dont eat.

RD, you would have loved it, I went through 2 miles of sheep with dogs working them, it was very impressive. I couldnt imagine 15 men being able to do what those few dogs were doing. It was kinda sad though, one dog that was out there working had a nose full of porcupine quills. I think if my face was full of quills I would call in sick.

wow so when are we gathering for a dinner ? Hey I don't know about Filas but I do know that when we fed the meat and scraps to our dogs they could let me know there was a deer with in that county lol. Never did not come off the mountain meatless. I envy you I have not done it in years. Congrats on getting your winter stores.

I am in NOWAY opposed to hunting I love meat too much to say otherwise (I just don't do it myself, LOL)

Sounds like quite an epiphany, and it also sounds like we will be getting some yummy grilled meat pictures soon :)

I hear ya buckshot, I really do. I've been in situations where I can smell the deer well before I see them and I have only my dog to thank for that. Oh and make sure you set an extra plate for me too!

:D There's a lot to be learned from our dogs. I wish I had a Fila to take elk hunting with me next week.

And ouch, poor sheepdog! The determination of those dogs amazes me; they'll work through immense pain.

I wish I could take mine, but the law frowns on that around these parts. Where are you going elk hunting at?

Oh! Antelope is YUMMY! Talk about inertnal maranade. They eat alot of sagebrush, so they have this nice sagey taste in the meat. BTW, got room for one more @ your table?

Heh, really? I'm not sure what the law says around here, but I know a lot of people use Karelian Bear Dogs for hunting in Washington.

I'm going hunting in northern Idaho.

Hunting seems a lot more fair than just picking it up at the grocery store. lol And I'm sure the meat is healthier for you.

It's a shame that little Buckshot couldn't go, but at least he's teaching you something. :D
