im posting this for a friend of mine.
he wants to know your opinions on this.

he wants to know which dog breed is better and why?

1st of all, IT IS GERMAN SHEPHERD

2ndly, it really does depend on your friend.
both dogs love being with people and should living inside as PART OF THE FAMILY

other than that, your friend should check out dogbreedinfo.com, look at both breeds, do some research then either adopt of find a GOOD breeder

Neither breed is better. However, they are different. People should do research, talk to breeders, and make their own decision as to which breed is right for them.

Rottweilers MUST have early and continuing obedience training, escape proof LOCKED fencing at least 5' tall, and 6' is better, and as Fransheska mentions, are companion dogs which do not do well left out in a yard to fend for themselves.

So it all depends on the motivation level of this person, and the amount of training and dedication they are willing to put into the dog. For my money, having someone else ask for them on a bulletin board is not a good first indication.

if his dad breeds german shepherds and has rottweilers, he probably should just ask his dad or go visit and see which he likes best. Other than that, the google is his best friend :)

ook lol in my opinion, since i DO have a german shepherd.. i like them better :) but then again, i havent had much experience with rotties
German shepherds probably shed more, since they have more coat
Rotties are also a tad bigger then german shepherds as far as weight

German shepherds are loyal, kind, but they are very active and if they dont get the exercise and attention they need..they will drive you crazy and find other ways to entertain themselves (like digging holes, running away, barking etc..).
but that goes for both breeds

Both breeds have a bad reputation

With both of these breeds, finding a GOOD BREEDER (one NOT on k9.stud.com) is incredibly important! lol, since they are so popular, badly bred dogs have many healthy problems. Find a breeder who health tests their dogs (OFA etc..) and a breeder whose dogs would seem to fit into your family.

If this person has a parent who breeds and keeps both breeds, why would they need to have a person ask strangers on a bulletin board?

I will mention that the MINIMUM acceptable standards for breeding Rottweilers includes all breeding animals being screened for hip, elbow, eye, and heart disease, and not being bred before 24 months.

Agreed. If he wants opinions from a message board, he should join and ask himself. That way he can describe more details regarding his lifestyle and needs.

Both breeds are great working breeds. Both breeds are often poorly bred, so it's very important to carefully screen the breeders. Both breeds need a lot of exercise and early socialization and training.

I prefer GSD's - Rotties are stockier than I like, but that's my just personal preference.

I love both breeds. Both extremely intelligent. But I prefer rotties myself. Both are down right breath taking to see. But of course, there is a lot more to a breed than just looks. I suggest he do his own research. Get out there and meet some good specimens of the breed. They both shed pretty heavily. Not something I particularly like myself, but I dont let that get in my way of choosing a breed that I am drawn to, but thats just me!

Tough questions, I think if he gets a well bred dog from either breed and socializes it, trains it and spends lots of quality (working, competing, playing) time with it you can't go wrong. I think how well his experience goes with the either breed will depend mostly on how much time he is willing to invest.

That said....

I have owned three Rotties and only been around some GSDs but never owned one.

Rotties are usually bigger, more laid back (on average), and are more defensive driven than prey driven like the GSD.

I think on average you see more cancer in Rotties but more allergies in GSDs.

I think on average GSDs have better work ethic and deal with heat better.

Rotties are better swimmers and I think on average like water better.

I think GSDs are better at fetch than Rotties on Average.

Both do well in the cold but I don't think either should be an outside dog because they love their people to much.

From what I have seen, in Schutzhund training I have watched a few GSDs can get frustrated more with handlers and travel up the leash. I have never seen a Rottie do that.

Rotties growl more even when happy. I had a Rottie that had different growls for every occasion. I haven't seen a GSD do that.

When I think about it GSDs vary a lot also. Just in one breed you have Working Lines and Show lines. In within those you have West German, East German, Czech etc.... in the working lines and divisions in the Show world with American GSDs being very different than West German show dogs.

Lots and Lots of variables. Perhaps a more specific question? DanL knows tons about GSDs and RedyreRottweilers knows tons about Rotties. Maybe ask your friend to log on and ask more direct questions.

For GSDs I also highly recommend going to

One of the greatest dogs i ever had the pleasure of living with was a GSD. She was absolutely beautiful, extremely friendly, and accepting to all!!!! She was extremely intelligent, loved learning new things, was very much in tune to what people were feeling!!!! Some day i will have another one.......I miss my girl.......better than a human best friend any day.......

Good post amstaffer!

I've owned only one rottie and she would not fetch, period. On outings to the dog park, she was very vocal during play (growling). I remember once when she was playing with a boxer, and the owner told me to get my dog out of there because she was "aggressive" just because she was growling a bit during rough play.. Both dogs were having a grand time. Oh, and she loved swimming in our 6 ft pool on hot summer days. Loved jumping off the side. :)

Just some of my own experiences.
