Anybody ever given garlic to their dog?
I have a yeasty dog that might benefit from it (see "Rescue Chihuahu- smelly ears, stuffy nose" thread), but I'm not sure on the dosage or how to administer it and in what form. Should I cook it, crush it or just give it to him whole? Is it going to burn him. How much is a good dose?
I read something about it beeing harmful. Dont remember where. Is it harmful? My dog is only 5 lb. Any suggestions? thank you

For a dog that small I would probably give a small tiny peice of a crushed garlic clove every other day....or smaller. Garlic is a wonderful anti-bacterial and anti fungal and it may be able to prevent yeast infections. Just be careful of large quantities as too much can lead to stomach upset. Garlic may also decrease the intestine's ability to synthesize vitamin K which is necessary for normal clotting of blood in large dosages.

The rule I keep in mind for supplements is moderation.

For my medium/large sized dogs, our vet recommended 2 medium sized cloves each of crushed garlic. Your chihuahua is much smaller than my dogs, I would do a very teeny piece of crushed garlic.

I would speak to your vet first, Garlic is highly toxic to dogs so you want to be certain you are giving a safe dosage

garlic isn't "highly toxic" to dogs. it can be fed without any problems in reasonable amounts and the most benefits come from fresh, raw cloves - it's a toner for the digestive tract and helps against parasites, bacterial and fungal issues.

dr. pircairn for example highly recommends inclusion of garlic in his homemade food recipes.
