I have always said if Gus EVER threw up he would go to a vet- better safe than sorry after knowing two of his siblings got Parvo and low immunity/poor immunoresponse to vaccinations can run in families- but he went and picked Christmas where NO vets even the emergency vets are open. He just vomited twice. The first time had a solid object that looked like a cat hairball or maybe cat poop in it, and the second one was just liquid and mucus.

The only weird thing he's had was a ham hock bone my so's father gave him to chew on- he's had pork before, so I don't think it was just that he's sensitive to pork. We are visiting family, not at our house, so he could have snuck into treats. If he ate cat poop I doubt he would vomit, because he's done it a couple of times before (yuck!) when I wasn't looking and had no trouble. He didn't bite any pieces off the ham hock bone. It was cooked, but I supervised him and he is nowhere near big enough to splinter a big ham bone, even a cooked one. No weird spices on it or anything.

This sounds stupid, but could a dog get a hairball? He grooms his tummy like a cat especially in the snow like we have right now- 3 feet of it outside- and could ingest a lot of fur that way. Could it be the ham hock bone even though he just chewed it and didn't eat pieces? He's only ever had one incident of vomiting, which was from Nutro Sensitive Stomach Puppy Chicken Rice and Oatmeal, which stopped as soon as I removed that from his diet. I think that the oatmeal was the problem, because he's had other Nutro foods and other chicken and rice formulas with no vomiting. He is now on Natural Balance Organics with canned Nutro Ultra Puppy, canned Natural Balance, and sometimes canned Canidae.

Anyone have any ideas? Does this mean no food for 24 hours (and I bought the dogs over here all Christmas dinner in a can...)

He is probably OK if he doesn't keep vomiting. I think the vet might advise letting is stomach settle for a few hours, and then giving him some cooked chicken and white rice. Hope he is OK ...

I agree, just keep a close watch on him and see if he gets worse--note if he pees and poops etc. Hopefully he just has an upset tummy. Please keep us posted!
