First of all, let me apologize for making my first post on this forum about fund-raising. As helpfull memmbers have pointed out to me on other forums, it's not exactly a trust-inducing way to introduce oneself. Desperate times, call for desperate measures, so I am willing to take the risk and beg you to at least read this and/or check out the links yourself if you wish to verify the information.

Basically, I have had in my care, as of Thursday evening, a very large, very abused and extremely injured GSD Female. She was found with several cig. burns on her back, bruising under arm-pits suggesting she was thrown or swung at something with extreme force, and an inability to put weight on her back hind leg. She was also starved to an auswitz figure and her waist was roughly 4-5 inches wide; this on a very large mostly GSD mix who we estimate would top out around 60-65 lbs in good health but currently weights 40-45. Thursday night, I had no idea what I could do to help her, other than take her home with me and pray very, very hard. My money is tight due to owning two very hungry horses in the middle of Georgia's severe drought and some past vet bills I am still paying off on my rescue pony. I posted that evening on the yahoo group, Billyboard, of which I am a member. They are a network of rescues, rescue personell, shelter volunteers, and concerned citizens dedicated to rescuing and providing transport for animals adopted out of state from Georgia's high kill shelters. A member in CA contacted me and together, we raised the funds to bring this dear dog to the vet the next morning. It turns out she has a fractured pelvis in several places requiring a very expensive, 3,000 dollar surgery by a specialist. We had the vet put her on painkillers and she is currently in my laundry-room, as comfortable as I can make her, while I and many other group members try to raise funds to pay for her surgery. Right now, we are asking for pledges only, as we wish to have donaters send their money straight into the vet's office performing the surgery and as we do not know if we will be successfull, are waiting to see if we can get enough pledges by Monday to warrant allowing her to suffer a little longer while we get the rest, before setting up the account. Therefore, all we ask now is for a name, contact info, and pledge amount, with the understanding that you will be contacted later when the surgery is scheduled and given information and how/where to send the money straight to the vet. As a graphic designer/illustrator, I am offering a free 8x11 hand-drawn pet portrait for any pledge over 10 dollars. Portraits will be securely mailed, free of charge, within the continental USA. Past artwork examples and pictures of the dog can be found at my photobucket account,

For those who question the wisdom of spending 3,000 dollars on one dog (a question I have been asked ALOT this weekend), I have the following reply I wrote this morning which I may use as a letter to the editor.

___________________

Alot of people have asked me, is she worth 3,000 dollars? What about the starving children in Africa? The homeless pets dying in Georgia's high kill shelters. The hundreds of animals that amount of money could save? I've thought about it, and this is my reply:

What about the clothes we buy, the upgrades we purchase, the shoes we never wear, the cable we bought for the channels then end up only watching the networks that we could have gotten by rabbit-ear? What about the fact that many of us spend 50 dollars or more for a single meal at Applebees? Or that we own movies we've never watched, books we've never read, cd's we've never listened to, and whole drawer full of gadgets, gizmos, and odds and ends we don't even remember purchasing? Was it worth 30.00 dollars for that bargain pair of shoes we couldn't live without, then discovered we had nothing to wear them with when we got home? Was it worth 20.00 for that top that didn't shrink enough in the wash to fit better than it did in the store? Did we really need to spend 50.00 a month for 120 channells of Home Shopping Network? Was the salesman right at the cellphone store, that adding 9.99 month for the text messaging package was a great buy, even though we have never nor will we ever understand how to, send a text message?

We conscientious, thrifty, "stewards" of our money are sometimes very good at being very silly! Just last month, I spent 11.00 to complete a sponsor offer for a free Ipod Shuffle which I never needed or wanted in the first place. I've now sent it back to Amazon for store credit, which, ironically, there is nothing on Amazon I need or want at the moment.

Yes, this dog is not a human. Some even argue that we over identify, transfer our human emotions to her, and that in the end, she will not grasp or understand the signifigance of being put to sleep without a fighting chance. I beg to differ. If anything, not having the reasoning capacities of a human being should make us pity her even more. Imagine being trapped in a world where no explanations were given for the things that happenned to you. They just happenned, coldly, inpersonally, for no other reason than that you and it were at the wrong place at the wrong time. Worst of all, you do not even have the comforting assurance of being able to look within for that still, small voice that says, "hey, it will be ok, we will make it through this...keep trying, keep hoping, help will come." You can't tell yourself that "it's better this way", "they really tried to save you" or "soon the pain will be over forever." All you know is immediate reality, without explanation or context, without reason or rationale, without hope or even the ability to resign oneself to your impending fate. You cannot hold immediate joy back to protect your heart when a kind human offers you food and warmth for a weekend with no promise of anything after. You cannot be practical, keep your hopes at a realistic level, or gaurd your feelings from being hurt once again. You are a dog, after all, without a soul or human brain...to expect you to understand would be "over identifying", "emotional transference" etc. You are a prisoner in a world defined by the humans who interact with you.

If not for the "humanity" I see in her eyes, than for the humanity she inspires in me and other's who have rallied to her cause. Surely a creature who can stir hearts as far away as Canada, deserves a fighting chance. A creature who has brought together perfect strangers to donate money for a dog they have never met, for expenses they will never altruistically benefit from. A dog who has caused naturally selfish human beings to unite and organize across 4 timezones, 2,000 miles, multiple internet forums ranging from GPT sites to horse grooming forums, and caused this very selfish, extremely money-oriented Dutch girl to give up her Christmas presents this year in hopes that her relatives will donate to save this dog's life.

To me and to others, she is worth every penny. She may be one dog, but she has the heart and fighting spirit of a thousand. The potential lives she can touch, the message she can bring to those who hear her story, has the potential to impact how humans view and respond to countless other animal crisis's in their communities. For these reasons, and more, I believe she is worth 3,000 dollars and more.

Sincerely,

Rachel Frieswick

Could you please post your preferred method of receiving payment, your vet's name/address/phone number, and give a general idea of your location so that we can find local rescue groups to help you?

Actually, some good news just came in. Looks like the K-9 Rescue League may take her under their banner, and handle the fund so people can send in to a non-profit for a tax break. We are going to continue handling the fundraising/transport, etc, but they will set up and administer the fund and handle the future adoption screening when it comes time for it. So far we have raised 600 dollars over the weekend! We are talking to the vet on Monday to see how long the dog can wait before having surgery, but it looks like with all the interest and support so far, we just might have a shot at raising the rest if she can wait just a little longer while we toot her horn, get her on the radio, etc. Keep your paws crossed! We are still nailing a vet down for the surgery, most likely a vet at the University of Georgia, as she has to have an Orthopedic Surgeon perform her very specialized surgery. Once things are finalized with the rescue group handling the fund, I will be sure to update you. We are in Madison, GA, about an hour from Atlanta. You can also pm or email me directly at [email protected]. Not sure on the preferred payment method, that would be up to the rescue handling the fund, I imagine they will probably set up paypal for those who donate by credit/debit card, and provide an address for checks and cash. I will be back with more info ASAP as soon as I know more. Thanks for the interest!

Please read the following email I am sending to those who expressed interest/pledged to help Billie the GSD:

Ok, so I JUST got back and am typing up the summary of today's vet visit.

Poor Billie was sooo scared, she was terrified when I crated her and loaded her into my Pastor's wife's van. She got car-sick on the way up, poor baby, and threw up this morning's breakfast EVERYWHERE. We got her to the Beaver Crossing Animal Hospital and Dr. Johnson looked at her and her xrays. Yes, if anyone want's to join me in hunting down and burning alive those responsible, now would be a great time. The vet examined her xrays and confirmed my suspicions...damage pattern, external clues, etc....all point to a human cause. Basically, with the strange bruising under and around her arm pits, it looks like someone grabbed her by the front legs and swung her hard enough at a hard object to break her pelvis in TWO places. It's one of the worst he's ever seen.

Here's the deal. If you were to look at her pelvic x-rays, you would see on one side, a dark line running through the left side of her pelvis. That's fracture number 1, and is actually a "good" fracture as it the type that can heal on it's own without plates. The scary part comes when we get to fracture number 2, on the right side of her pelvis, right above the leg socket. What's happenned is that in addition to the major break all the way through, the joint has been moved up and is majorly rubbing/shoved into another sharp bone edge. It's almost like half her pelvis is raised and "dislocated". My terminology is horrendous, but you get the idea. Due to the severity and the way the joint/pelvis has been moved around, getting access to the area is difficult. Basically, he could approach it with plates or with screws. Plates, he said, are running into the 5,000 range and even he cannot do the surgery for what she would need. Plates would be ideal, if money was limitless, but in his honest opinion/30 years orthopedic experiance, the screw option would be just as effective. The crux of the matter is whether fusing has occurred limiting his access to the area. With either surgery, if fusing was prevalent, he wouldn't be able to do anything without seriously damaging the nerves to her whole back end, and she would have to be put down for humane reasons. So, we decided to go the screw route, which is 1200 dollars. If, God forbid, she doesn't make it through the surgery and has to be euthanized, he will only charge the cost of anethesia, about 200-300 dollars. If it is successfull, he will charge the full 1200. This wonderful man is not requiring a deposit, is accepting on good faith that the 900 we have pledged will be sent in ASAP, and is not even requiring me to apply for credit or put anything down as collateral. Poor man had to listen to my treatise on why one dog was worth all this effort and money, but in the end, after I fought and begged for why she was worth it, he sighed and gave me the look like, "You are young, naive, and inexperianced, but gosh darn it, you sure are convincing so even though I'll kick myself later for being so soft, I am going to help this dog!"

Pledgers, the time has come to send in your pledge! Billie needs you, and this lovely, gracious man (Who, might add is boarding her in his home untill surgery tommorow/Friday as the vet clinic is full, full, fulll and didn't charge a dime for today's visit) needs to see the funds promised allready pour in as fast as possible, as Billie, I and those who care, really, really owe him for how much he is going out of his way to help. One of the vet techs was talking to me during paperwork time and she rolled her eyes when I asked her the surgery time and said, "Knowing Dr. Johnson, He'll probably stay late tonight and do the surgery!" You can call in your pledge via phone (Be sure to mention Billie AND Rachel Frieswick) and use a credit/debit number which you can give to the vet and they will put into her account.

Pledgers, time is of the essence and while they are going ahead with the surgery on good faith, they really need the money to come in ASAP. Please call them today, if possible, or tommorow, or ASAP. For those with paypal, you can use the Virtual Credit card feature to generate a CC number connected to your account, which you can use to call in with. Email me at [email protected] if you need help with this. The vet's will track the donations for me by name and amount. In the event that things do not go well (I refuse to consider this, but hate to), then we will either donate your pledge to the charitie/rescue of your choice, or refund you your remaning portion. Basically, the math works like this: Let's say the surgery was 100, and you pledged 50. This means you pledged 50% of the total cost. Then, after everything is done, surgery ends up costing only 75. 50% of 75 is about 37.50. We take 37.50 our of your donation of 50 and apply to expenses for Billie, then return the remaining ballance from your donation, 12.50. This seems like a fair way to me to return the unusued portion if it comes to that, Which, we all pray it doesn't.

PRAY PRAY PRAY for Billie, who is very scared at the Vet's. PRAY that her bones haven't fused and the surgery is successfull. If the bones have not fused (and I am hoping, since the local vet seemed to get good range of motion on Friday, that they haven't) then the surgery has a 75% or greater chance of success and total recovery. If the bones are fused, she will have to be put down, as nothing in the world, not all the money, could fix it without paralyzing her.
