Joey, we love him, but he stinks. We have to bathe him weekly to keep him fresh and huggable and sometimes thats not even enough! Luckily he tolerates baths well, and sometimes even seems to enjoy them. (although they do always seem to make him potty inside afterwards, arrg.) Well anyway he has dry skin that he scratches every now and then so I wondered if there was something I could put on him or give him to help keep him moisturized? I have even considered putting something oily in his water like skin so soft, but im afraid that may be irritating to dog skin, lol. Im not sure how that all works ;P Anyway, TIA!

Hi nobleruby... it's an indication that his diet may be an issue if his skin smells, it's dry and he's itchy. You bathing him weekly would also a concern if you're using a detergent shampoo. Skin so soft won't hurt him. (You meant spraying it on him after a bath verses putting it in his drinking water, didn't you. Lol) I use this on my horses faces in the summer. Great at repelling insects . Reccommend you address this from the inside out and list the top 7 ingredients in the food you're feeding. If wheat, grains and preservatives are up there on the list, that can be a problem for Bassets.

If he smells that bad, maybe he has an underlying condition or maybe he isn't doing too well on his current diet. For the baths, try a gentle, soothing shampoo that has oatmeal or aloe. You might also want to watch out for his ears. Clean them once a week, and make sure they don't go into his food or water bowls whenever he eats or drinks.
Charlie also has dry skin. The vet advised me to bathe him with oatmeal soap and to put a little grease or oil on his food a couple times a week. I just pour a tablespoon or so of bacon or hamburger grease on his dry food when I am fixing dinner. It has done the trick, and it works out great for me because I don't have to figure out how to dispose of the grease! Charlie weighs about 80 lbs so, depending on the size of your dog, maybe use a little more or less grease. It has also made Charlie's coat nice and shiney.
Keeping the dog clean is the responsiblity of the dog owner. Giving our dog the proper diet is also crucial.

Thanks for the tips! I do clean his ears every week, as I learned quickly that they have their own seperate unpleasent smell if left unattended. It is possible that he is recovering still from an unhealthy diet in the past, since he was starving for months, im not sure how long it would take until those side effects wear off? I feed him dry Dads dog food and he gets table scraps as well, I try to give him a good hamburger sized amount of meat every day, whatever were having. (Chicken or beef usually) I checked the first 2 ingredients of the dry food in our store and they were the exact same in every brand, so I went for the lesser expensive one. He has that "Hound dog" smell, mostly around his neck and head, so maybe a snood would help too! Thanks all!

I'd switch foods it will most likely help the smell so you don't have to bathe so often therefore no dry skin (the food will help with that in the first place also).
