Dog Theft Action Group Prepares for Summit
Dog Theft Action, the lobby group campaigning for a new approach to dog theft in the UK will be participating in Discover Dogs this weekend. DTA were delighted when the Kennel Club invited them to share a stand with PetLog on the main KC stand at this important event in the dog calendar.
In August this year Jayne Hayes and Margaret Nawrockyi attended a meeting at the KC along with External Affairs Manager Phil Buckley, New Business Manager Celia Walsom and Diane Farrell, when the offer was made to join forces with PetLog, the Kennel Club’s Reunification Service, to draw visitors’ attention to the numbers of dog thefts in the country which despite massive recent publicity continues to soar.
The message to dog owners will be take your dogs’ security very seriously indeed! During the course of the year DTA has felt encouraged by a distinct change in public reaction to our presence at shows and events. When we campaigned outside the NEC during Crufts the vast majority of visitors were unaware that dogs were being stolen regularly and that little was being done to address the situation – and many did not want to know!
We now believe that the dog owning public is more aware of the dangers of dog theft and ready to discuss the problem with us. We have been contacted by individuals who have suffered at the hands of dog thieves – many of them dog breeders who are unaware of the tenacity and deviousness of dognappers. They have invited people into their homes and premises to view litters as potential purchasers – the thieves waiting for those opportune moments to return and help themselves to a puppy - or a litter, worth a small fortune. The puppies are not always permanently identified and they quickly vanish off the face of the earth.
The Dog Theft Action Summit will take place almost immediately after Discover Dogs. Again we are the guests of the KC, who have offered to facilitate this opportunity for the major organisations in the canine world to join forces in the search for a solution to this national problem. On Tuesday 15th November, MPs, vets, the canine media, representatives of welfare and rescue charities, members of industry and the police, will meet DTA co-ordinators and advisors at the only meeting to focus exclusively on dog theft.
Dog Theft Action invites all visitors to Discover Dogs, to come to the Kennel Club stand and obtain information about our campaign, to discuss security issues and suggest inclusions to our agenda for the ‘Summit’.
