Also, where do you take dogs for teeth cleaning, your vet or your groomer. What is the procedure?

Puppies start getting their adult teeth somewhere around 4-6 months I think.

If you feed them a good food and give them lots of good things to chew on (or brush them yourself), you should never have to take them in for a dental cleaning. It's not very good for the dog's teeth, as it will strip away the enamel after a period of time, not to mention the fact that they anesthitize (sp?) the dog to do it.

My friend insists on feeding Purina Pro Plan and has a 9 month old yorkie and she has brown on her canines (her pointy teeth ) and bad breath. I don't think she gives her chews. Is this only fixable thru the Vet or are there chew items she can give her dog to fix the damage already done?

I don't know what to tell her, and am looking for advise. My dogs all chew bones and have great teeth. I was a little surprised when I looked at hers.

I thought that only happened to older dogs???

Purina does bad things to teeth, but Yorkie's are known for having horrible teeth anyway. Buy your friend's dog a Nylabone to start with and subtlely point her in the direction of TheDogFoodProject.com .

She can also buy enzyme chews through the vet that are supposed to help, but I'm not very convinced they work like they're supposed to.

Funny - I already gave her one! :) (nylabone)

Should I suggest a cleaning to her? Vet or Groomer?

The best teeth cleaners around are raw bones.

Chicken wings or necks are great for small dogs.

My puppies start getting chicken wings as soon as they get teeth around 3 weeks of age.

:D

So its not that uncommon for a dog of 9 months to have bad teeth? I've just never seen such a thing!

Raw bones are not dangerous to dogs in general. My dogs have eaten a MOUNTAIN of chicken bones. All raw.

Chicken wings work GREAT as teeth cleaners on small dogs.
