Ok So I am writing a persuasive speech for my speech class trying to persuade people to adopt from animal shelters. We have to use what's called Monroe's Motivated Sequence Outline Format. Which means we have to establish:
1-the problem
2-the solutions
3-the results/benefits

So far I have for the problem
1-overpopulation
2-backyard breeding
3-puppy mills

for different solutions i have:
1-adopt
2-foster
3-volunteer
4-donations
5-spay/neuter and dont breed your dogs
6-if going through a breeder make sure he/she is reputable

for benefits of adopting
1-cheaper
2-most are already spayed/neutered and have their shots
3-save his/her life and give them a loving forever home
4-you can foster first to make sure the dog will fit your lifestyle

Anything else I should add to those?

Also I was wondering if anyone knew anywhere I could get statistics like:
How many dogs are put down a year?
How many kill shelters versus non-kill shelters are there in the US?
How many dogs are in shelters?
and any other interesting stats like that

Thanks everyone!!

It looks very good, but I have one more thing to suggest for your problem list.

4-uneducated dog buyers

Many dogs end up in shelters because owners do not do their research before getting a puppy. They just get a dog because it's "cute", without thinking about how that breed will fit into their lifestyle, or how much work goes into raising a dog. For example, I know a family in an apartment who gave up their border collie because they didn't know it would get "that hyper." Or they don't realize that a chow can be a very stubborn dog. Or that pugs are extremely heavy shedders. I remember reading that most dogs are surrendered at 6-18 months old. That's prime adolescence, and many families aren't prepared for it.

And also, many dogs are surrendered for things that obedience training would have fixed: such as housebreaking issues, chewing, jumping up on people, etc. If people did more research and took the time and effort to educate themselves on proper training, these problems would not appear in the first place.

i was looking on ask.com for "how many dogs euthanized per year" and it came up with alot of different sites for different states and counties. WV had over 90,000 PTS in 1995 and Atlanta, GA has over 95,000 a year. If you only do 90,000 per state per year you get 4,500,000 (on the low side) per year!
Very, very sad. :(
