I have a 1 yr old German Shepard that I call Sabby. She's a pretty smart dog, but I can't seem to stop her from chewing on the garden hose. She's an outdoor dog (but spends a lot of time in the house), so it's hard to catch her in the act. There is one particular part of the hose, but not limited to, that she like to chew in half. I mixed some habanero pepper with maple syrup and rubbed in on the part of the hose that she like to chew. It might have worked if it had not rained a few hours later.

Open for suggestions,
Matt

Can you wind the hose up so she can't have access to it? Since she lives out there with it and you can't catch and redirect the action then there is not much you can do. Make sure she has plenty of amusing chew toys, she may be bored out there with no one around so she needs lots of stuff to play with. If you ever go out and she is chewing it than bring her to her chew toy and get her to chew it. If you walk out there and she is chewing her toy then walk over and give her some treats. Never forget to praise good behavior while you are training. I'd say the best thing to do would be keep it out of her reach.

Put the hose where the dog cannot get to it, or put the dog where it cannot get to the hose.

Putting the hose up is not an option. Too much hose and it runs out to the garden. From there I have a couple soaker hoses going down the rows. I had to roto-till the other day and pulled the soaker hose in and she bite that in half also. She has plenty of play toys. My wife goes the park a lot and finds softballs. I bet she has a half a dozen or more out there.

I wonder if there is something I could put into a sprayer that I could spray the hose down with. Something that would not be harmful to the dog.

Thanks

Nothing will stay on the hose that you won't have to redo multiple times a week, especially with sun evaporation.

There's really little anyone can suggest except keeping the dog and hose from each other somehow..

If your dog is spending vast amounts of time outside alone, she will find ways to occupy herself whether you are a fan of what she does or not. Hose probably seems like a toy, and it's keeping her busy while alone.
