I would imagine the investigation is ensuring that stories match up and events occurred as reported. Making sure that the father didn't (for instance) kill the guy then fabricate the attack story...checking backgrounds...etc. And making sure the verified facts fit within the law.

Basically just doing their due diligence...doing their jobs.

My first thought was how do they know the father was telling the truth? I haven't seen much on this story, was just wondering if the guy he killed had a record of molesting kids.
