I am interested in doing conformation (other than AKC) with Hondo. As he grows I am noticing that he has beautiful conformation. Wonderful topline (what a real GSD should have, not like the AKC), great angles for a GSD and his gait is amazing (even as a clumsy, big-footed puppy, lol). The thing is I dont know where to start. Conformation has not been my thing, but I am curious as to how the "show" world, differs from the "working" world and it seems fun. Where do I start?? Help!!!

First, where is Hondo registered?? That will limit your showing places.
Ex. Riot is registered under the CKC. He can only be shown Conformation under the CKC b/c he doesn't have American parents etc etc.

Find a club that trains in conformation. I found my conformation instructor through some friends, as well as through Riots RallyO classes etc. Riot started conformation training when he was 3-4 months old. Then, we stopped it a bit and focused on RallyO and then we got back into it and now we are competing in it.

Then find out what a "show GSD" should look like in your area by hooking up with some GSD handlers/breeders etc etc.
Did you get Hondo from a breeder that did showing?? Definately chat to them about it.

Then you'll need to learn how to properly stack your GSD. Some use stacking blocks, others just use positioning.
You'll need to train hondo to stand for examination.

you'll need to train hondo how to properly extend his gaits on leash.

Conformation is definately MUCH MORE then just running your dog around in a circle. There are things you MUST do correctly, or your dog looks horrible.

Uh, what Summer said. lol

If your dog is of good conformation but you don't want to show in AKC, there is always UKC and IABCA.

As long as the dog or pup was registered in its original country by a reputable registry.Than you can just apply for your countries registeration.
oh rite so as long as the dog was registered with the AKC first it would be ok to register the dog with the KC as well and then show him under the KC.

I was just wondering cause my harley is registered with the KC which is where he was born and he is now registered with the Jersey KC which is where we are now.

canadian dogs can and are registered every day in the AKC - the AKC will register a dog of an accepted breed as long as it has an accepted pedigree in a registry the AKC recognizes (of which the CKC is one).
