I'm not real sure how to do this. Supposedly there is a vein I am supposed to look at on the dog's nails but I don't saee one. My last dog I had I hurt when I clipped them when I was real young. I dont wanna do that again and make my dog terrified of getting his nails clipped. Any help would be great, like a weblink or anything .

thanx

Hey!
the way I always clip rude boy's nails I always look at a little red area that they have when u look at the side of the nail and I clipped I before that cuz if u get to that spot or red area he will bleed. If any thing u should bring the dog to the vet to do tha. I hope it works good luck!!!

i think the best thing would be to go to the vets. they can show you how to do it right. even with pics and people telling you, having someone show you and walk you through it the first time would be the best

It also depends on the nail. My lab had dark black nails, almost immpossible to see vein. My new dog, the vein is very visible. Just depends. Definitely do the vet route or a groomer might be willing to show you what to look for if you pay them for the first cut.

If you get used to looking at the ends of a black nail, you will learn what it looks like when you are getting close to the quick.

You need to make sure your cutters have a very sharp blade to minimize the compression of the nail when cutting, as this is uncomfortable.

I use a dremel tool on my dog's nails.

:D

This site tells how to use a dremel.

My dog has black nails and I can't see the quick at all. When I cut his nails I just clip the tips off. Be very careful because if you hit the quick your dogs nail will bleed ALOT. One time I was cutting Chico's nails and he moved at the moment I cut and I chopped a big piece off and he bleed and bleed and eventually we had to take him to the vet. We tried everything from ceptic powder, to flour, to a bar or soap and nothing stopped it. When you cut your dogs nails have someone help you hold or distract your dog, it will make it alot easier. Just be very careful and with time and experience you'll be able to cut his nails with no worries.

When you are cutting black nails, if you shave off very thin pieces, and look at the very center of the nail each time, eventually you will begin to see a light grey ring just inside the hard part of the nail. This is the beginning of the quick.

The last cut you can make before you get blood, you will see the quick bulge just slightly out from the tip of the nail.

I hesitate to try to think of how many black nails I have cut over the last 15+ years. LOL
