Ollie just came back from his annual and I asked the vet about it . He said that they don't give it unless the dog spends it's winters in FLA . Through Purdue they learned early on that Rabies and DHPP needs to be given every 3 years . However they are now recommending the Leptospira Vaccine . A pricey visit , but worth it for once a year . Breakdown : Annual Exam - $46./Heartworm test - 28.40 / Parasite analysis - 28.32 / disposal 2.40 / Bordatella - 24.80 / Leptospira - 32. / Throid check 53.40 / Bath, ear check, nails - 35.00 . discount 25....total 225.29 ----- peace of mind - priceless !!! In 4 years Ollie has never been a patient .

lepto's another one i don't know quite what to do about. my dogs get it every three years as part of their dhlpp. i *know* lepto is around here. i also know that the lepto component of the dhlpp does not last three years, which means that my dogs are only protected for part of the time. and yet i really don't want to be poking them with more vaccine.

i was hoping my boss would come home from the northeast veterinary conference with helpful new information on the subject, but all she didn't, and i still don't know what to do with my own dogs. she thinks i should vaccinate just steve. she thinks the vaccine is safe, and she's going to give it to her own dogs. i just... still don't know.

I noticed that VIN has an article from Nov 2009 when swine flu fears were intense on the topic of veterinarians grappling with the pros and cons of the new vaccine.

VIN News
Canine flu: How big a threat?

Starting at comment #23 on the article below, there are some reports of adverse reactions to the canine flu shot from owners of dogs that have received other vaccines without problems in the past.

Just on the lepto note, we give it down here as we do see the virus down in this region. When a large majority of people quit vaccinating for lepto a few years back (because it's the most common part of the combo vaccine to cause an adverse/allergic rxn..although those numbers are still quite small), major outbreaks occurred in the northwest and cases sprang up all over.

My dogs are around mice (live in the country) and in and out of pond/lake water. They get it.
