Breeders and Registered Names

I'm curious your reasoning on this. I'm 100% okay with the breeder choosing the registered name (I would prefer the freedom to come up with one but I don't mind one already being in place) but I would never buy a dog I couldn't choose the call name for. I know you said they *can* change it, but why do you prefer they keep it?

Because the call names the puppies are given generally tie into the registered names, is all. In the end it really doesn't matter what the owner actually calls the puppy, because we triple register our puppies with all of the registries we compete in, and give them separate names that essentially do the same thing. So for example, these are the names for our current "horror film" litter of five puppies.

It's really just icing if the owner decides to keep the call name we've been using.

Toast's breeder simply required (asked, really) that his registered name end with their kennel name. I'm sure if I had picked something completely inappropriate they would have said something but there was no theme, letter, etc.

I agree....what a silly way to judge a breeder. I don't think there are any laws regarding naming dogs, just personal preferences.

Pox's breeder just asked that pups are registered as "Kennel Name" _____. The litters do have themes and names when born, but that's just for fun for the breeder. She doesn't require you to name to that theme but many people do keep the pup's original litter names.

Most people in my breed do litter themes. Either the first word must be the same across all puppies in the litter (which is how both of mine were named). Or one word must be used in all of the names but it doesn't have to be first.

But naming varies so much from breeder to breeder and breed to breed. I would find it really odd if a breeder did not require me to put their kennel name in there as a prefix or suffix (if they did confo or performance events), but otherwise I wouldn't find it odd to be able to choose my own name.

I like the litter themes, because it makes it much easier for me to pick names. If I could pick anything I would be indecisive forever. I wouldn't mind if the breeder picked the name either. I would find it weird if they picked a call name and expected me to keep it though.

Watson's theme was Olympic ______ because they were born during the 2012 Olympics and I got to pick the _____. There's not a whole lot you can do with that though. Hazels' was Bright _____ because it tied in to her mom's name. That one was more fun and I was between Bright Side of Life (from Monty Python) and Bright and Beautiful (James Herriot).

I have had it all kinds of ways. I have had them come with a registered name and a call name. I have usually kept it unless it was an 8 week old puppy and I will call it what I want and my breeders have not given a name yet. I do not generally care if the dog has a registered name already or the breeder wants it to be something in particular or if they have a theme. I usually agonize over it if the litter has a theme. So it is easier if they come with a name.

I did not have a litter theme when I got my Parsons. We named the bitch, but since we did not take possession of her littermate brother until he was 11 months old, he came pre named. I LOVE his registered name and call name anyway.

The ibizan hound came with a litter registration form, I had to file his papers, and since I did it online, I could have changed what they had written in. But I liked his name as well, so I kept it.

I'm on board with everyone else. Totally a weird way to judge a breeder. There are much more important red flags to look for.

Tulsa's breeder had a call name for her around 6 weeks. Asked me if I liked it and if I would *consider* keeping it. It was Riley. Blech. I told her I didn't like it, said I'd like to call her Tulsa and that was that. There was no litter theme or anything of the sort. I said, I want "Kennel Name Livin' On Tulsa Time" and it was done. The last litter that she had did have a theme for call names, but all but two were changed once they went home.

I don't know if it is the same rules for future breeder. I do recall one of the other breeders I looked at allowing you to choose.

Harlow WAS from a BYB, so had I chose to register her I could have picked whatever. Iggy isn't registered either, but obviously he would have come with a name since he's oldman. I'm not sure what his breeder's rules are either on naming-- maybe blackrose will weigh in on that.

Chef is "Kennelname Hidden Treasure", his call name was Griffin and the breeder registered him as such but approved me calling him Chef for his call name. If it were up to me he would've been "Kennelname Michelin Star" but I didn't really pick him, he was given to me at roughly 3.5-4 months old. She would've let me pick his registered name too as she does for most of her puppy buyers but the circumstances were as i outlined above. Oh well!

This!!! I had a hard time with both Ivans and Phoebes registered names and there was a theme with each. I could not imagine coming up with a name on a blank slate. I would never come up with a registered name.
For Ivans litter his breeder went with Color. So each puppy had to have a color in their name. For Phoebes litter it was Gambling. To be honest my friend gets all the credit for Phoebes registered name. LOL I couldn't come up with anything I liked.

I love coming up with registered names. I have a small list that I'd like to use for future dogs. Sadly, nothing really goes with the call name Banjo. And that's where this whole conversation started. lol If I do end up with a male instead of a female, little dog is going to end up being called Kennel's Banjo. lol

Landshark! That's already on my list! Lol Or at least the shortened, Mountain Music. I like the mountain theme.

Weird. So weird! I had to include both registered kennel names and there was a theme - "Lucky." I couldn't find anything I liked that was BSG-related, so I let her daughter name Starbuck- Fidelis n Wingate's Lucky Charm.

I think I would be very suspicious if a breeder didn't require you to put their kennel name in there. As in "Do they not want to be known to have bred this dog?"

With my litters, I don't generally let people pick their registered names. If someone had ideas and had committed to a certain puppy, I'd definitely be open to their suggestions but ultimately it would be my decision.

My co-breeder/mentor had been burned with people tacking on dumb or inappropriate stuff on the ends of their names. This isn't a specific example, but things like "2sexy4u", which really doesn't fit the image we're going for with our kennels and breedings. Since most of these guys go out as show and performance prospects, we just like to play it safe. lol
