hi
i got a 9 month old maltese pup. ever since i got him at 15 weeks i was feeding him nutro puppy lamb and rice. he seemed to do fine and i never put to much thought into dogfood until i came to this wonderful site.

3 weeks ago i slowly switched him to innova evo and i was impressed. he pooped much less, it smelled less and looked better (if there is something like good looking poop ;) )
but since 2 weeks he scraches a lot and is biting / licking his paws.
so i thought "shoot- food allergy". nothing else has changed but the food so i wouldnt know what else causes it....

he ingenerell is very picky and always had a very sensitive stomach so i am not really surprised if he is allergic too.

now i am slowly switching him to natural balance venision and rice. is that a good choice?
i would have loved to stay on innova but if i red that right allergy dogs do better on food with one source of protein?

i know wellness was supose to be good for that but i red wellness is not that good anymore but i couldnt find much information about natural balance.
good food or crappy?
and if crappy what else could i try?

i was thinking about natural balance duck and potato too:

INGREDIENT LISTING
Potatoes, Duck, Duck Meal, Canola Oil (preserved with mixed tocopherols and citric acid), Potato Fiber, DL-methionine, L-Lysine, Sodium Chloride, Salmon Oil, Flaxseed Oil, Rosemary Extract, Natural Flavor, Yucca Schidigera Extract, Potassium Chloride, Choline Chloride, Vitamin E Supplement, Ferrous Sulfate, Zinc Proteinate, Copper Proteinate, Potassium Iodide, Thiamine Mononitrate, Manganese Proteinate, Zinc Sulfate, Copper Sulfate, Ascorbic Acid, Vitamin A Supplement, Biotin, Calcium Pantothenate, Manganese Sulfate, Sodium Selenite, Pyridoxine Hydrochloride (Vitamin B-6), Vitamin B-12 Supplement, Riboflavin, Vitamin D3 Supplement, Folic Acid (Vitamin B-9).

is it bad because it has potato FIBER?

compared to venision and rice:

INGREDIENT LISTING
Venison, Whole Grain Brown Rice, Rice Flour, Venison Meal, Rice Bran, Canola Oil (preserved With Mixed Tocopherols And Citric Acid), Natural Flavor, Flaxseed Oil, Kelp Meal, Yucca Schidigera Extract, Potassium Chloride, Sodium Chloride, Choline Chloride, L-lysine, Dl-methionine, Dicalcium Phosphate, Dried Parsley, Rosemary Extract, Ascorbic Acid (vitamin C), Vitamin E Supplement, Taurine, Ferrous Sulfate, Zinc Proteinate, Copper Proteinate, Potassium Iodide, Thiamine Mononitrate, Manganese Proteinate, Zinc Sulfate, Copper Sulfate, Vitamin A Supplement, Biotin Supplement, Calcium Pantothenate, Manganese Sulfate, Sodium Selenite, Pyridoxine Hydrochloride (Vitamin B6), Vitamin B12 Supplement, Riboflavin, Vitamin D3 Supplement, Folic Acid (Vitamin B-9).

and is THAT bad because it has rice bran???

i red everything i could on mordys site (awesome information, thanks so much you made me be aware of how important good dogfood is !!!!!)
but i am still a little bit confused in this whole dog-food-djungle.....

can somebody help me out?

If everything else in the food is okay, the potato fiber or rice bran is really not a big deal at all. It's just that the more poor quality ingredients or fractions a food contains, the lower the quality. Neither rice bran nor potato fiber themselves are bad or dangerous ingredients.

Food intolerances/allergies can be caused by any ingredient present in a food, either the meat source, or the source of carbs, or any supplement.

While Natural Balance is a good food, my first course of action would be trying a very simple food that does not have a long list of ingredients that could possibly cause issues, such as for example California Natural Lamb & Rice or Herring & & Sweet Potato.

I would leave "novel" proteins such as duck and venison in reserve just in case at some point you are dealing with a full-blown food allergy attack and need something to fall back on that your dog has never been exposed to before.

thanks mordy!!!
your knowlegde is priceless

i will definatly try to do that
we seem to only have one little store over here that sells decent dogfood though.
thats where i got the innova from, i didnt see california natural but then again i didnt look for it at that time, so hopefully they do......

if the stores around here dont carry it should i stay on natural balance venison and see if hes doing ok with it?
and leave duck and fish for emergencies??

The stor should carry it, or at least be willing to special order it for you - it's made by the same company as Innova.

Failing that, the venison is definitely ok.
