My new puppy has now been here for about 14 days and she still isn't house trained. Is this normal?? I don't know this because my other older dog never made an accident before, I just had to tell her once and she got it. Therefore, I basically have no experience house breaking a dog. I am trying to train her to pee in her "crate." Her "crate" has a peeing pad underneath it. Its more like a cage and one that you can pee into. She doesn't get that you are suppose to pee in the crate not outside of it. Is this confusing for the pup???? We know we are not allowed to hit or yell. We have tried training pads, but she doesnt seem to get it, I have also tried this scent drop thing. But nothing is working!!! I need help before she pees on my carpets. We have also tried leashing her to eliminate chances of accidents but thats not working either. And because we live in a colder climate, it is better for the dog to use the litter box rather then going out side. HELP ME!

Also, is it too late to bring your dog to training school when they are already 5 months old???

Confused  and helpless :( ,

Omigod... you are NEVER supposed to "train" a pup (or dog) to go in his crate!!! It's the opposite! That's where the trouble begins!!! Please don't do this. Let us help you learn how you are supposed to really potty train!

Hi Becky. I'm up in Terrace BC. Is it as hot there as it is here today?

First of all you are expecting WAY too much from this pup. Where did you get him from? What were his living circumstances like? If he hasn't had an housetraining you will need to start from scratch and it will take months to learn.

Second, are you sure, sure, sure that you want your dog to pee inside? It sounds like he is already trained to go outside. You are messing with his head to try to make him pee in his crate. That is his home. You don't want your dog to learn to pee in his home ever. I really recommend that you take him outside to pee. You'll be much happier.

Have you gotten any good books on housetraining? Where are you getting your method from?

If you are sure you want to crate train I suggest you use Mordy's method

She may be not wanting to pee in the crate because she could be looking at it as her bed. A place to sleep, is not a place to pee. We should change pups, mine pees in the crate and yours does not. LOL
Pups go at different rates for training. Try to get into a schedule and take pup out every hour to do jobbies. Big rewards for going outside. If you really want to train to pee inside maybe try something like a homemade littler box. You can PM me anytime as well, I have defenantly been in this spot and in some ways still am.

It seems like Im always posting becuase my dog has problems. Now my puppy wont stop play biting. The biting hurts. Whenever we play she attacks. I have tried telling her no but she still has to learn the meaning of that. I have also tried to close her jaw and tell her no bite whenever she starts biting. But that doesn't work. What should I do.

Full of questions,
Becky

I have to start out by saying all of the things you are going through right now are NORMAL and part of having a puppy! It is your job to remain patient and diligent with your training and teaching so that your puppy has a clear understanding of what you are asking. I would go out and immediatley sign up for a puppy pre-school training class and go to ALL the classes, don't skip any. The socialization is key. Next, take your dog to the bathroom outside!!! If you are concerned about the cold and the fact that your dog has a short coat then go to a dog show or pet supply store and buy a jacket for the pup to wear outside for bathroom breaks (after the pup is potty trained, you don't want distractions like a jacket right now!) Last, you need to except the fact that your puppy WILL have accidents on your carpet, but if you are very attentive you can prevent almost all of them. Take your puppy out every half hour for potty breaks with lots of praise when he/she does go outside. When you can't monitor your puppy then put he/she in the appropriate size crate. As far as the "play biting" goes, that is normal too! When your puppy bites you then get up and walk away and ignore your puppy for 5 minutes. This is a LONG process and usually doesn't improve until after the teething stage (5-7 months), but you can lay the foundation now that puppy teeth on human skin is not acceptable. Please don't expect things to change overnight! Puppies take time and aren't usually fully trustworthy while left alone until after a year. I would also start the NILIF training method ASAP, this would be a good tool for a novice owner. If you are unsure about this method then do a search in the training forum...it stands for "Nothing In Life Is Free."
