Guess you guys already know that I will be bringing my lil Mango girl for neuter sometime after xmas, still waiting for the pet insurance to kick in before I make a appt. Just cost too much here EUR 240/- :(
Just want to know how long does it take for them to recover from the surgery and what I should look out for when I take her home after the surgery and time after that.
Any food I should avoid, walks etc?
Thanks for any input that anyone may have :)

In general, the spay is a pretty routine surgery to recover from IF you make sure dog stays away from the surgery site. Which means, no licking or chewing!! Most spays are closed with stainless steel sutures that need to be removed 10-14 days after the procedure. The main thing to her recovery is to restrict vigorous activity and to make sure she does not lick or chew - more times than not, this requires an e-collar a.k.a lamp shade LOL! Once the sutures are removed she can go back to doing what she did before. Keep her diet the same, but you vet will instruct you as to when you can offer food after bringing her home. If your vet offers take-home pain medication I would defiantly get it. A spay, although routine is a very invasive surgery and the recovery is painful. Dogs don't generally show pain as part of their means of survival in the wild, so they can be in quite some pain and hide it well while they recover. So, don't let her behavior fool you. The girl will be sore :) All my dogs came running out to me after the surgery, tails wagging and all. The hardest thing is trying to keep them less active as they try to go back to their normal activity level quickly.

She may not need a lamp shade, some dogs are very good about leaving their surgery sites alone. Terriers and sporting dogs are known for their destructive capabilities though LOL! My pugs never pulled at their sutures. If she's a nervous or really active dog than she may.

Precious was in a lot of pain the day she was spayed. But, hers may be due to the fact that she had uterine prolapse. Her being in that much pain only lasted the day of the surgery; the next day, she was normal.

You could also start giving her arnica tablets around a week before and continue afterwards, it helps reduce the bruising and so help with pain relief. Tiny tablets so dont take much getting down them either.
