Sorry to bug you with another food question.

I feed Phoebe a high quality kibble mixed with minced beef in the morning, and in the afternoon I cook rice and 3 veg for her. I used to cook chicken with it, but I have discovered she loves tuna, so now every day I am mixing a tin of tuna in with the veg which she loves. Once a week I give her a tin of sardines mixed with her veg.

My question is this... I have read somewhere that there is some kind of poisining in tuna?? I can't remember where I read that, but is it true, and if so, how many times a week would I safely be able to give her tuna.

Thanks again for all the good advice.

tuna is more contaminated than smaller fish, especially with mercury. you are better off feeding smaller, more short-lived fish such as sardines and mackerels.

i can't give you any exact values since contamination differs depending on where the tuna was caught, but personally i wouldn't feed it more often than once a week.

Thanks Mordy, as usual, for the prompt, helpful reply. Ooops, I was feeding it way too often and I will definitely take it down to once a week only.

Thanks again for always taking the time to answer all our food related questions - we would be lost without you :D .

I know you asked Mordy, but I have heard that Tuna causes kidney failure in cats, so with this in mind I wont feed it

Agree... it also depends on if its "farm" raised or not. There is speculation on the amount of mercury found. Some tuna, shark, swordfish etc. can contain mercury. Salmon is pretty good and has the omega 3's. Fish with mercury is more harmful to prego. women because of the fetus. I don't know if there has been a "sucessful" study on mercury vs. dogs, but you don't want to take the chance. Two servings of fish per week (the one's cont. mercury) should be fine. If all else fails, you can go to fish oil (omega 3's) supplements daily.

mercury causes tissue damage regardless whether the tissue is human, canine, feline or any other species. the forms of mercury found in contaminated fish are called "organic mercury compounds" (e.g. methylmercury) and are even worse than for example industrial forms, since the organic compounds cross cell membranes more easily.

one thing you have to keep in mind is that the amount the animal is exposed to does matter, and so does the size of the dog. so for example the EPA recommendation of 6 ounces of tuna steak (which contains more mercury than canned light tuna) per week being safe for the average human being refers to a body weight of approximately 132 pounds - for a 22 pound dog the equivalent would be one ounce.

See... Mordy justs want to fight.... Thanks for quoting me!
Please answer me this... has there been an suc. sudy regarding mercury and canines? Has there EVER been a study?

Still don't want to fight with you, but even though I did agree with you above, you still want to "point me out." Fine... we can go head to toe with animal knowlege...this is why I thought at first there should be a debte, we all love to get our agression out at some point, this just may be yours.

i don't know what your problem is, but i'm certainly not here to fight or "go head to toe" with anyone. i'm here to help people with their questions and problems in regards to diet and nutrition.

you need to learn that not everyone who quotes a post of yours on an internet message board does it to annoy you or to "point you out". personally i do it when i reply to a specific issue that comes up in a thread, since otherwise it's often hard to follow a conversation where you can't tell who is responding to what.

i don't know what kind of study you want to know about, you are not being very specific, but i can tell you that all nutrients, including minerals and vitamins, affect the body similarly regardless of species. as an example, maybe this article will be of interest to you:

Where did THAT come from? Mordy knows her stuff and is kind enough to share it with us for free. We're lucky to have her onboard.

Glad to have her aboard... but what about the rest of us who know their "animal stuff."
What about my knowledge? I have tried at least 3 times to "befriend" Mordy, only to get 'quoted.' I see nothing wrong with my first post above, only to be quoted by Mordy....
Also, don't care much for sites on the internet, I live and learn... don't believe anything I read and only half of what I see. So please don't push internet animal sites on me, I get my knlowledge first hand and look for more, but not off the net.

did you read my above post at all? how much more can i say than there doesn't necessarily have to be anything "wrong" with something i quote from another post, it's just something that makes it easier for everyone in the thread to understand what someone is referring to.

if you have a problem with me, feel free to contact me directly, there is no need to take potshots at me allover chazhound.

Nobody is pushing anything on you. Mordy is sharing her advice. She knows a lot. She studies it (I forget the course Mordy). It's too bad you don't learn from what you read. It may help you.

Honestly, was there a real purpose..??? Your a mod., so therefoe should be more kind, or understanding, and maybe a bit forgiving. Just found out a bit ago that you were a mod., therefore, I now undrerstand the butt kissing. You have friends here and others are just plain afraid of you...how nice. Sadjie hates me and follows you lead, again, how nice....

I was AGAIN... in SEVERAL posts trying to be nice to you and even agreed in some. As I said, I didn't/don't a war with you, but it seems every post you are on, and if I post something, you have to be negative with me. Know what, I would love to hear from and see and feel your views. Please pm me for my phone number, call me and lets have a nice talk. I really mean that... Just let me know..Mordy, I am being sincere, let's really talk.... I am not being a jerk, just real, maybe we can both learn from each other.

Who are you addressing? Both of us? I don't even really understand what you are saying. Who's afraid of us? What a weird conversation.

k, i'm bored, I DID NOT say YOU were butt kissing. Anyway, this is a dog forum, but there seems to be more fighting than dog issues. Again, I invite you to call me anytime, not for fighting, just understanding....call me now if you want, I am not a bad person....but this bickering is boring....

Sadje... you are also welcome to call me, I bet if we spoke, there would not be problems. We prob. agree on many issues. I would love to speak with you too. I am not evil. Pm me if you want to call, maybe we can 3-way call, it's hard to speak over a forum.
