Hi everyone! I have a 3 1/2 month old puggle, Davey, that LOVES to learn tricks. He has sit, stay, down, come (needs work, lol), shake, speak, roll over, give kisses and up (stand on back legs) in his little brain already, and has retained them all doing them with verbal and non-verbal commands.

Clearly I have my hands full- he needs to be stimulated alot!

He learned sit in one day, I kid you not. I know every dog mom thinks their dog is the most amazing and probably says these sorts of things, :D but I am quickly running out of things to teach him.

Has anyone done some more advanced training with a puppy? He is in puppy class for the socialization and the obedience help. What age can you start to do advanced tricks and how do you know if they would prefer agility or something else (what else is there then the advanced tricks?)?

He has a great attention span (15-20 minutes a session when he is in a good mood) and seems to really enjoy learning and showing off. Any words of advice for keeping this little guy happy would be appreciated!

Oh I forgot, we are working on heel and he knows drop it (well, MOsT of the time he knows drop it), leave it seems to need work too.

I was wondering about whisper...I think he can get that one. When I told him to "ssshhhh" tonight (I didn't ask for a speak yet) he gave me a little tiny bark.

Thanks for the suggestions! We are going to start working on high five tomorrow =)

I ran into the same problem with my Tango as a pup. She's learn anything in 5-15mins, depending on the difficulty level of the trick -in fact, it's the same way to this day. I ran out of things to teach her quickly...lol. I didn't see the "stand" command listed anywhere in your posts, which is a command I feel is very important, so that's another thing you can teach him. You can also teach him the following. As far as agility and such goes, you won't know if he's going to like it or if he'd prefer something else over it. Before going on to agility commands though if that's what you're thinking, focus more on the basic commands. He can't start learning to jump over things until he's a year or older I'm pretty sure. That's how it is for larger dogs anyway. You could teach him how to go through a tunnel though.

Here's a list of some of the things Tango knows, so perhaps you could take a few off of it. Most of these she learned before she hit 5 months old. I just copied and pasted it from another post about dog tricks, so there are a few that you probably can't teach him for various reasons but I think most would be fine. Some are tricks, some aren't:

Stand- Hand & voice
Sit- Hand & voice
Stay- Hand & voice
Come- Hand & voice
Down- 2 hand signals & voice
Heel- hand & voice
Side (come to my left side) - Hand & voice
Front (sit in front of me) - Hand & voice
Bang! (play dead) - Hand & voice
Roll- Hand & voice
Paw, foot (paw is for the right, foot is for the left...both back and front)- Hand & voice
Five- Hand & voice
Ten- Voice
Shake (as in physically shake, like she would if she was wet) - Voice
Get it (go get what we're pointing to)- Hand & voice
Leave it- Voice
Take it- Voice
Drop it- Voice
Hand (place object directly into my hand) - Hand & voice
Speak- Hand & voice
Bow- Hand & voice
Over (for jumps) - Hand & voice
Through (tunnel) - Hand & voice
Find it!- Voice
Lights (turn the light on or off) - Hand & voice
Bring it (Bring something to me) - Hand & voice
Nice/Gentle (means the same thing)- Voice
Off- Hand & voice
No.... (I never simply say no, it's 'no' followed with another word. Ex: No dig, No bark etc.)- voice
Get back/Go back/Back up- Hand & voice
Go to your place (her blanket) - Hand & voice
Go to bed (her crate) - Hand & voice
Lets go!- voice
Outside- Voice
Inside- Voice
Last one (when you're throwing a ball and you say this, she knows I'm not throwing it after that)- Voice
Get your ____! (Blank is usually a ball, Frisbee etc.) - Hand & voice
Focus (watch me and focus on me)- Hand & voice
Wait- Hand & voice
Up- Hand & voice
Wanna cookie?- Voice
Are you hungry?-Voice
What's that?/Who's there? (runs to the door to see if some one is here)- Voice
Dance- Hand & voice
Hold it- Hand & voice
Go/move/get out of the way- Hand & voice
Hurry up (when she goes outside)- Voice
Spin (turn in a circle to the left)- Hand & voice
'round (turn in a circle to the right) - Hand & voice
Turn (When I'm grooming her and want to do her other side, she turns the other way) - Hand & voice
Flat (Lay flat on her side. Most commonly used on the grooming table)- Voice
Half (Come up to a down position after laying flat)- Voice
Okay! (her release command)- Voice

Great lists! Thanks!!

I just figured out today he needs to learn stand in order to learn things like bow. Any advice for teaching stand? He just sits as soon as he sees a treat...lol

What I did with Lizzie is...

well do you know what a "Puppy Push Up" is?

It is where they Sit, Down, Sit, just like that!

Then when they come back up for the last sit you move the treat farther away from them so they follow the treat and come into a stand position...then praise and keep doing this and then lable with a word and/or hand signal! ;)
