I have never earned a CH on my dogs, and I am not sure I ever will depending on cost.

I know to get a trick dog championship you have to spend probably about $400.

But I think I spent that much just getting Angels novice agility titles (can't exactly remember it's been a long time and my mom had paid for the trials).

So.. In your sport, if your dog got all the Q's every time he/she ran, how much money would it cost for a dog to get a CH in that sport/organization?
Not including traveling expenses and such.

I feel like this will be really interesting, but I could also see it turn out to be a bit depressing.

Oh God. I did the math once and laughed sadly.
Assuming 100% Q rate, assuming both classes entered each day, doubling each day, and average entry $36 per day:
3 novice legs - $108
3 open legs - $108
3 excellent legs - $108
20 masters QQs - $720 - this would also be an average of 37.5 speed points each day on those 20 masters Qs. Judges are wheeling tighter and SCTs going down, so just for shiggles lets say instead average of 25 speed points, which means you'd need 30 legs to get your speed points instead:
$1080

(108x3) + 1080 = $1404

That's a lot of money for a PVC MACH bar.

USDAA - assuming you Q'd every time, and managed to get your 3 super Qs within those first 5 masters snooker runs, and your pairs partners and your teammates never lost you a Q, and going by the average class cost in my region, an ADCH or PDCH is going to run around $760.

I'd like to meet the person that could make that happen. I spend about $150 a weekend on entry fees for my actively competing dog, and I can assure you his championship, if it ever happens, will be costing us a fair bit more ;)

I heard someone call their MACH their $5000 ribbon.
Meg's PDCH was well over that, I expect. I mean, classes alone were around $900/year. Plus the entries, travel, seminars, supplies bought....

But it is a REALLY nice ribbon.

And it was something that meant a ridiculous amount for me. We could have had a lot more fun for a lot less money by just never trying to get those stupid 5 gamble Qs. But I got to hang that earned ribbon off my 'pulled from a high kill shelter, too scared to walk up stairs when I got her' dog. It was the same reason I spent so much money to go to Cynosport when I knew there was less than zero chance we'd be on a podium. Meg and I achieved that qualification together, and it was money well spent to be able to walk into that arena.

Meg is awesome in her ribbon! :) She is amazing.

Yeah the person I was talking about owns her own equipment and facility so didn't have to pay for instruction and classes. But I'm sure she didn't count the amount that went into buying the equipment in that.

I spend $780 just on in person agility classes a year for one dog. Plus online classes if we do them. Private lessons. Equipment. Entry fees (around here you have to have hotel stays a lot of the time)

It's not a cheap hobby.

Webster's was probably not too far above that, tbh. Around $1000, I'd guess. Doesn't count gasoline obv but he knocked it out quickly. I know he earned his AX/AXJ in eleven or twelve days of trialing (would require nine, minimum). Earned a QQ his first time in ExcB and picked up a QQ or three nearly every weekend. Points matched - he earned his 750th point the weekend after his 20th QQ.

Rockin' secondhand dog.

And yet still bloody expensive to do.

And Mira's math is not nearly so kind haha.

We will never calculate the cost of Paytongility.
Ever.

Over a year in open with still only one OAJ leg to show for it?

Never.

That's when you sing LALALA and pretend you don't know math, haha. Open purgatory is a terrible thing.

I feel like that's so hard to say. If I found some big show with 5 point majors, and won every day, I could get a Ch on a Welshie in a weekend. So maybe less than $200 including hotel and entry fees. I know or have heard of a few dogs who have finished like that, but even finding those big shows is hard and the chance you will win all three days is slim.

I know someone who went from CD to OTCH in less than a year, and it only took 4 shows to get her OTCH. I'm not sure of the math on that, but it's probably the cheapest OTCH I've ever heard of.

To add to the CH discussion: AKC obedience trial champion (OTCH)

Can in theory be gotten for $298

CD (3 legs, $25/run): $75
CDX (3 legs, $25/run): $75
UD (3 legs, $25/run): $75

To get the OTCH, you also need 100 points and three first places, one from OpenB, one from UtilityB, and one more from either. The maximum number of points that can be received for first place is 34 for OB (need at least 51 dogs in the class), 40 for UB (need at least 41 dogs in the class). So in theory this can be done in 3 runs, and since a second run in the same trial (entering both utility and open) often saves you a couple bucks...
3 runs = $25 + 23 + 25 = $72

To say that this scenario is unlikely is the grossest of understatements.

I know someone who more or less did that (though I think it took her 4 shows instead of 3 to get the OTCH). Unbelievable.

This is all too fresh in my mind after having sent in $420 in entry fees for next weekends shows and trials with Hawk, Lark, and Solo.

With all qualifying scores a WTCH would cost,

$44 for started duck title
$44 for open duck title
$44 for advanced duck title

$60 for started sheep title
$60 for open sheep title
$60 for advanced sheep title

$70 for started cattle title
$70 for open cattle title
$70 for advanced cattle title

Get all three title levels on all three stock types gets you your WTCH so $522.

Not that tracking is necessarily my sport but I think it is probably the cheapest. Tests tend to range from $100-175 per test. One pass at each level. So, $300-525 for a CT. Well and you usually give the judge something for the certification track before running a TD.

I don't personally know a single dog to do this.

I don't even want to think about how much I will spend on entries during Elsie's lifetime.

I know I've spent more on entry fees than I did on her purchase.

Ok, so awhile ago, probably shortly after writing this thread, I decided to just video both the dogs doing some tricks and sent in for my trick dog champion titles. Which they both earned. So now I can say I have a CH in something lol.

I have a horrible memory, but the novice, intermediate, advanced and expert trick dog titles run about $20 per title, so ~$80 for those. Then to get the Ch you spend something like $120. So its about $200 for a TDCH per dog. The nice part, for now at least, is that it shouldn't ever cost you more than this to get the titles. If you don't have those tricks down, you don't pay the fee. (Unlike showing up to regular trials and if you pay in advance and if your dog doesn't Q then you are out that $$). However, if there is something where your dog clearly doesn't know the skill in the champion video they give you like 3 months or something to resubmit and if you don't, then I think you are out that money. But really it should be about $200 for the TDCH.

I thought you meant showing at first, and glanced at the numbers without reading the posts, and went "UNDER $400? WHAT?"

Theoretically, if I only showed Rage at the AZ club where their entries are $9 because they actually have a huge membership and lots of other funding to offset their UKC costs, I could've finished Rage's bench CH for $27 if she'd won every time out (not impossible for her) - but that isn't taking into account that it's an 8 hour drive for us.

Realistically, I trucked her all over the east coast for some Nat'l level shows and paid much higher entries and more in gas (truck vs honda now).
