My take on it is that the dog has to learn to work for everything they get. Be it food, treats, play or love/affection. I always make my Bailey sit before he gets a treat, before we go outside and he has to sit and wait while I fix his food and put his bowl down on the floor. He does not get to eat until I release him.
The best thing about NILIF is that its free, and so easy to implement The whole family has to do it though. It's no good one member doing NILIF, everyone as a whole has to do it, so as to not confuse the dog.
