I've only had to do this a couple of times when it got stuck in my puppy's long fur. I'd rather wipe it off onto a napkin than have it falling off around my house!

This is an interesting topic. Once yami had something stuck back there and he was running around in circles trying his hardest to get it off. Then he proceeded to sit on the ground and scoot... strange.. I would have helped him if he would have stayed still. Well, I guess its like of like that little kid stage where they thing they can do everything themselves? o.o

Can't say that I have on my own dogs, but I have had to clean up after some dogs at work. Sanitary trims are your friend!

Yeah right, thats gross.

Thats exactly why my puppy goes straight to his crate when he comes in, there is no way he is going to sit on the couch or bed with poop in his butt.

Hmm. When my dogs were pups, I always gave free time in the house after they pooped outside. Like a reward for doing good. But then again poop never sticks to their butts unless they are sick or something.

My puppy NEVER gets free time in the house. He can play outside all he wants but when he's in the house he's on a leash.

I don't bring him directly in when he poops outside, I give him a treat and about 15 minutes to run around outside.

A leash is a good tool for inside if you are having problems with housebreaking, but I have never needed to do that. Do you use a crate?
Or is it just outside -or- inside on a leash? My goal is to have a total trustworthy dog in the house. I have accomplished that with every dog I have housebroken.:)

And by free time, I do not mean unsupervised. I always watched my pups like a hawk, but they were free to play, not just be tethered.

When he's inside long line (20ft) at all times. So that if he does pee/poop in the house I have a connection to him and take him out, rather than chase him around while he's still peeing and pooping. In time he will have full run of the house but he is still very young (9 weeks) and is unpredictable.

Yes I use a crate and it works wonderfully. Take him outside to use the bathroom and run around then bring him in and put him in the crate. Then about 5 minutes later I take him out and play with him in the house. I am trying to keep him on a schedule and I want him to understand that when he comes in he goes straight to the kennel. He eats in the crate, sleeps in the crate ect. But he gets a sufficent amount of exercise and attention.

I also want to get him used to the crate because I will be traveling with him attending schutzhund trials and SaR demos with his trainer.

Yes 9 weeks is very young and at that age unpredictable.
Our Shepherd has no problems traveling in a crate, but yet has never been crated in our home. She was almost a year when we got her. She is a patrol k-9. Certified in narcotics, apprehension, tracking, and officer protection. She goes to get recertified every year and it is a wonderful experience. I am sure you will have a great time with your dog.

By the way, with the housebreaking I was referring more to my labs, since Rocket was older when we got her.
