Well, I was talking to a lady who said Boxers and GSD's were LARGE dogs...

To me, they aren't, they're medium dogs... To me, a large dog is a Great Dane.. And breeds like that....
Medium dogs to me are, boxers, GSD's, BC's, dogs like that...
Then you've got small dogs: Mini Aussies, Cocker Spainals, Mini Poodles... Etc.
Then you've got really small dogs: Chi's, Yorkies, etc...

So, what do you consider to be a:
Really Small Dog:
Small dog:
Medium dog:
Large dog:

Or do you just think large and small dogs?

I pretty much think the same was as you do as far as large dogs and medium dogs, but for small and extra small, for me, they are all clumped into the small category. No extra smalls.

Really Small Dog: 0-5 pounds
Small dog: 5-15 pounds
Medium dog:15-50 pounds
Large dog: 50-100 pounds
Really Large: 100+ pounds

I dont really think much in terms of "breeds" because of the differences within breeds and the fact that there are so many mixes out there today. I basically just go by weight.

I agree with the above weight ranges. I always considered Marlowe (55 lbs.) "medium" but I know that some people who encounter him consider him big. But with Conrad around (90 lbs) he just doens't seem that big. If Conrad were any bigger though, like over 100 lbs. I think he'd be entering the realm of "giant" or "extra large".

I agree with this... I've always considered Maddie a 'medium' dog, but I can see where some think she's small. Missy's a large dog to me, although now I don't feel like she's that big compared to when I first got her. To me
Great Danes, etc Giants ! :p
GSDs, Rotts, Dobs are Large
cockers, BCs, some terriers are medium
mini daschunds, chis, yorkies are small

Tiny: Chi, Mini Poodle, Chinese Crested
Small: Cocker Spaniel, JRTs (and similar terriers)
Medium: "Pit Bulls", Border Collie, Australian Cattle dog, ESS
Large: Goldens, Labs, GSDs, Irish Setter, Doberman
Giant: Great Dane, St. Bernard, Great Pyrenees

Boxers I think can fall into both medium and Large depending on the dog. So can Goldens probably since I'm dog sitting one no more than 50 pounds but you can see them get MUCH bigger.

Tiny: toy breeds
Small: 15ish to 35ish
Medium: 35-60ish
Large 60 to over 100
Giant: 100+

I definately think of GSDs as large dogs . . . Just not HUGE dogs.

I think it depends a little on height and activity level though. I consider my Mom's standard poodle to a large dog, though she's lighter than Sarama, who I consider medium. Tarnish (the poodle) is long limbed and very active, making her seem bigger than her weight. Sarama is stocky and though active, is not non-stop motion, making her seem a bit smaller than she really is.

I think its a matter of personal opinion exactly where any dog lies. If you grew up with German Shepherds then they would probably seem medium ("normal" in other words) and only Danes and the other 100+ breeds are 'large.'

Basically... I think anything under 35 pounds or so is small.

Molly is about 65 pounds and I really don't think that's that big, lol.

I agree that there is 5 different size classifications.
Toy
Small
Medium
Large
Giant

Labs and Shepherds are big dogs, but they aren't giants! However, when we actually throw weights in it can get sticky, sometimes a GSD can weigh 110lbs, but I certainly don't think of them as Giant breeds, even at that weight, just a big GSD. The same goes for a tiny Giant breed. But in general I consider breeds who by breed standard weigh over 100lbs giants.

i agree essentially i base on "akc" group...
Really Small Dog: Toy breeds under 10lbs usually (thogh those under 3-4lbs i consider "tiny"
Small dog: larger toy breeds and some terriers
Medium dog: around cocker/springer size ect
Large dog: would be shepard, boxer ect

then of course there are the "realy big dogs" (aka Giant breeds) and this would be danes, mastifs, saints newfies, wolfhounds ect...height and "girth" make a giant breed for me rather than an actual weight.

That sounds about how I think of it too. Phoebe at 40 lbs is medium, and Orson at 75 lbs is large, but then you have Roxy (AKA Moose baby) my son's girlfriends Old English Mastiff who is well over 100 lbs whom I would call Giant.

Just her head makes her look giant, LOL

I don't just go by pounds.. because, for instance, I consider Salukis LARGE dogs.. but I am sure they don't weigh as much as, say, a Golden of approximately the same size would.

If we're going by weight.... things can overlap, LOL. But, approximately:

Tiny: >10-15 lbs (Chi, Yorkie, some Min Pins)
Small:15-30 (Cocker Spaniel, Corgi)
Medium: 30-50 (ESS, BC)
50-60 could be medium OR large
Large: 60-100 (Goldens, GSDs, Labs)
X-Large: 100 + (Mastiffs, Great Danes--even though some actually weigh less)

Yea i agree with this... I tried to put things into nice weight categories but that is not always easy since so many dogs have different builds.
