My two dogs have been together for a couple of years and do everything together, (including Breeding).

My question is, how will my male react and/or what should I do with him during welping, rearing and weaning?

I truly do know what I am doing and just cannot for the life of me find data on this subject.

Any constructive help appreciated.\

What's done is done . I only had one male that was interested in a whelp . Bubba cried so and wanted in , that I brought him in . The female was comfortabe with it , so I let him stay . He ended up being a Mr. Mom and after a few days even helped cleaning up after the pups for Mom. My other males just didn't show much interest until the pups were up and playing . Good luck !!! Hope you've got " THE " book !!

It all depends upon the mom. She will need a secure place that your male cannot get into. The only male I let near my pups is my 5 year old boy, but then, he has very little interest in the pups, and that is only because my bitches are very comfortable, AND know that he will respect their space.

For safety's sake and to not stress your bitch, don't let the boy have access to the litter until they are older. My whelping area is a corner in my livingroom. I put two xpens around the whelping box/area, and hang sheets on them to give the mom more privacy. I do not let my boys in to the whelping area. When the pups are older, I might let the boys have access, but very brief, and very supervised. Some boys don't like puppies swarming them looking for the milk bar and will correct a puppy. Between 6 and 8 weeks of age, I allow the pups more access to the other dogs, but only the dogs that I know will be good with the pups.

IME, some males will play with puppies, others will ignore them, some will "correct" them - and often too harshly.

Okpik, how depressing to have to deal with that when you are trying to enhance your knowledge by consulting other people. Some people just can't hold themselves back from an opportunity to impose/lecture/preach/patronise, but rest assured that your 'what might happen if' question is totally reasonable and obviously indicates your care about doing a good job of raising this litter.

So please don't be put off asking questions here - there are just enough people around who are willing and able to help and answer constructively, to make it worthwhile. Good luck with your pups!

I stated Very Clearly in my opening statement that I did know what I was in for. I have raised and reared most animals all my life on a farm.
I just simply have never dealt with a livein sire before.

My dogs are proven and pregnancy planned you obviously cannot read.
This a wanted litter and all are sold to researched owners that have wanted this breed for a couple of years.
I, unlike most have taken time to allow the bitch to grow, be confirmed andcheck out medically , which with this breed is a null point as they are not over bread like most of the AKC riff raff.
Thanks for the CONSTRUCTIVE critisism. I really do get loads of data here on so much. Just keep your bleeding hearts put away.

I just have one question.

If you "know what you are doing", and you're "an old farm hand", why are you here asking us questions?

I mean other than starting a flame thread?

Signed,

"that AKC riff raff"

Seems to me that Okpik is breeding working KBDs . . . Which would explain the lack of show titles.

It's a legitimate question IMO . . . Back off a little, guys.

I agree . We breeders do have our passions , but we are here to help ---not hurt . Obviously this was a planned litter . Now let's help with good answers to any questions posted . We want what's best for the dogs and puppies don't we ??

Although I'm no breeder, a friend of mine is raising a litter of Rottweilers right now and she's kept the sire away from the pups except when supervised (and when the bitch actually allows it). So that would be my best advice. I don't know how he'll react to the pups because I don't know him, but no access unless supervised is probably best.

Good luck with the litter! I would just watch VERY closely anytime you have the sire around...even though he may not do anything, the bitch might get defensive and do something to him.
