There really is no "best" family breed. Every family has different preferences. Luckily, there is a dog for everyone (assuming they're not the idjits we see on CL).

The best family dog breed is the one that fits in with your family the best.

It's going to vary for everyone. The best breed for my family may be the worst breed for yours and vice versa.

That's the easy answer, we all agree with that. This is just a game.

I vote greyhound.

But you really can't pick one dog, because every family is so extremely different. A Boston terrier is a fantastic dog, but not if Dad is looking for a running buddy. Etc....

So, while I won't name a breed, I will say that the best family dog in my opinion is an adult dog chosen with the help of a reputable rescue. One who is old enough that their personality is relatively set and that has been evaluted carefully by a knowledgable person who has the dog's best interests in mind.

Very true. A boston wouldn't fit our family at all. Neither would a lab or a golden. JRTs fit well, but I wouldn't call them the best family dog :D

Indeed. My ideal dogs are smart, agressive and hyper. I'm sure that doesn't fit the bill for 98% of potential dog owners.

What?! Not every family wants a snoring, snorting little fart machine on four legs? Oh well, more for me then! ;)

Who could resist that face? :D

I wuvs the Joey i do.
ANyways Mary is the perfect family dog. Be it the lab in her or the pointer. From babies on up, there is no better nannydog. She wipes tears. raises our spirits with her ever wagging tail, and keeps track of us all.

Oh gack NOoooo!! :yikes: As a light sleeper I couldn't handle a snoring dog ... as someone with a rather sensitive nose I couldn't live with frequent canine flatulence either. Hence no bully breeds for me!

But I'm all in favor of the bully breed fans enjoying their own dogs! :)

Another unfair stereotype of the Bullies . . . Tallulah neither snores more than a gentle buzz every once in awhile, and she rarely ever farts. Especially now that I make sure she never gets a shot at Mexican food again, lol!

I think the breed is relative to your family. Border Collies and ACDs fit my uncle & aunt's family wonderfully.........they own 500+ acres and raise Brangus, Texas Longhorns, and Arabians (horses, not people ;) ). But neither of those breeds would fit my family. Nor would a St. Bernard or Siberian Husky do well in my hot & humid climate with no good energy/exercise outlet in regards to what they were bred to do.

For my family the APBT is the ideal dog. They are athletic and have enough energy to accompany me for long walks & jogs, loads of energy to place fetch, high pain tolerance to wear an "oops Cole stepped on the dog's tail" isn't an issue & the fact that they are extremely easygoing towards strangers & other people so that I don't have to worry about any issues there.

Mary snores, i love her snore, it is quiet but very much a real snore. Bronki snored, and Pepper does sometimes too. My so would say "that dog is keeping me awake" which was humorous because he snored loudest of all. So i would have to lay there and keep bronki awake until Jim fell asleep and started snoring, then i could let Bronki snore away.
