Ok, so since I got laid off I haven't been able to really afford much as far as dog food is concerned, so I had to go back on Kirkland for the second time. Well, my dogs went back to having the same soft stools they had before on it, and started shedding like crazy again. I went out a couple days ago shopping for another affordable dog food, but with better ingredients this time, and chose Fromm Adult Gold.

I wasn't planning on switching until the Kirkland was almost gone, but this morning was the last straw. Shippo went out and had another soft stool, and got poop stuck all over his butt feathering! UGH! So I just got back from getting the Fromm and will be switching them ASAP. NO MORE KIRKLAND EVER!!!

LOL I feel your pain. When I switched Sawyer over to EVO, we had a week of the runs while he was detoxing/getting used to a cold-turkey switch. I had to wash his pantaloons pretty much every time we came back in from going potty. Now that he's adjusted though, OMG...it's like picking up after a Chihuahua!

Lucy always does this :( We had to shave her butt, because we can't find a food that works.

We've tried Avoderm, Innova, Solid Gold, and California Natural. We've added pumpkin, asked the vet, asked the pet store folks...nothing :(

Hope it works for you!

Oh wow! That never crossed my mind about the excessive shedding having to do with the food. I switched to Kirkland too and have noticed looser stools but just from Jose` (not too bad) and incredible shedding, which I have never seen out of these dogs before...not like this. I mean, good grief! Why does food cause shedding? So, wow. I thought the ingredients looked pretty decent, especially for the money.

Cali, how long have you stuck with each food? Sometimes it can take a bit for their system to adjust. Have you stuck with chicken formulas or tried other meat sources? Maybe she has an intolerance to a certain ingredient?

When I went to Kirkland from innova (money issue as well) I noticed an increase in poop amount and shedding, but they weren't really loose, just softer than what they had been on Innova.

I feel your pain too... it's amazing how on good quality food dogs poops are like nothing... and on primarily raw... they turn to ash in like 3 days.

We buy the biggest bags, and go through them till they're done. About 2 months on each?

Avoderm is what the shelter had her on, but they told us it was only mediocre, so we switched off that.
Solid Gold is lamb, but we had the same issues
Innova was recommended by the pet store, but no change
California Natural is supposed to be really simple (just chicken and rice) so he thought a blander food would help.

He said the next step would be to go grain free...we shall see. The Cal Natural is pretty bad--even with the pumpkin added, it's gross :( It's only been 2 weeks though, so maybe it'll get better.

Sorry to thread jack!

If the CalNat doesn't work, maybe see if a fish and potato formula would work? I know Solid Gold has one...Fromm does too.

I wonder if maybe raw wouldn't help though? You'd have complete control then.

Yeah, I thought about that...but I don't have any desire to do raw!

I think a non-chicken one would be good though. Thanks :)

Fromm is affordable? Where the heck do you get it?
I feed the Five Star Duck & Sweet Potato (allergic tummies) and the stuff is like $56 for a 35lb bag!

Since money is tight I'm sticking with Kirkland for now... though I do notice more shedding and hate the shedding. Bamm's stools are more frequent, bigger and slightly softer than when he was on Evo, though they are not runny. Another thing I notice is they smell more than when he was on Evo... sadly Evo is so expensive for me right now.

Well there's a place off Federal and 112th called Muttz Pet Goods. I'm not sure how much the Four Star is (I remember looking at it and it being out of my price range ATM), but the From Adult Gold was $22 (tax included) for a 15lb bag which isn't bad. It was the cheapest food in its price range with the best ingredients out of all of them, so I snagged it.

I had the same problem, tried every available food and they were sick on all of then... took forever to realize it was the chicken which was in every food... we now feed a duck based food and the problems ceased within days of them getting on it and have never had one issue in the 2 years they have been on it.

Haha... I was thinking the same thing... I also feed the Duck forumla.

We tried most of those with Beau. What worked for him has been Fromm, Eagle Pack Holistic, and Blue Buffalo. Anything else and it's just bad as far as the runs go. Any of those available to try? Right now ours are on Eagle Pack Holistics Duck and oatmeal formula. I love it. Fromm's duck food worked just as well, but we can get the Eagle Pack in a large bag and with 5 dogs, the Fromm didn't last long. Blue Buffalo was a temporary thing while we were trying to find somewhere that sells Fromm's and it worked great too.

Summer does better on the EVO, but I'd just had it trying to mess with Beau's runs. When Summer and I move out again, it's back on EVO for her.

Yeah, there's a couple great pet stores nearby that have a lot of options. I can check it out one day and see.

Good thing she's not picky! She'll scarf down anything, luckily :)

Saga's tummy gets kind of icky on any sort of red meat formula. We have gone to a fish based food with MUCH better results. Right now we are on TOTW Pacific stream and so far she is doing great. We just switched off of Nature's Variety Prairie Salmon and she did awesome on it. ( I, however, needed to budget down a bit, the 30lb bag of TOTW is 6 dollars more than the 15 lb bag of NV at the store I go to.)

Oh I forgot. If you walk in and tell them "Hey I just found this place and thought I'd come by and check it out," they'll let you pick a free plush toy from a basket! Shippo's already destuffed his LOL.
