I just wanted to add my thoughts on these brats...
Not all kids are brats, and not all kids will run up and want to pet your dogs.
If you ever see me and my kids in a store, my kids are the ones that are ignoring your dog. :)
They are not allowed to pet any dog that I am unfamilar with... And they know that. I have had owners tell my kids "you can pet my dog" and they don't even look at me for the answer.. They already know that answer will always be NO. And it isn't to make your dogs feel comfortable... It is a "safety rule" in my family.

When I can take 2 small boys to a week long police K9 seminar and expect them to behave accordingly... then I think they can pass on everyday contact with strange dogs. ;)

The only people that make or allow kids to be brats are the parents... Let's put "blame" where it belongs.

Edit: Kids are not trained.... They should be "taught"
Exactly! The parents are the ones that allow the bad behavior, the one that do not have structure in thier lives.. The ones that don't give to shits what happens or could happen..

My kids well they are now 25 22 and 18 and none of them will or would have crossed the line where dogs were concerned.. They as well knew when they were young as well as today.. No stranger meaning adults or kids are allowed to touch any of our dogs or thier dogs..Why? Because you never know what could happen!!!!

So yes you are right kids need to be taught respect as well as trained and structure in responsiblity.. If I were you I would be majorly proud of your kids they sound awesome!!!

i totally agree!!

That is so frustrating though, lol

I rarely have issues like that with Oakley...in fact, we *want* strangers to pet him to help socialize him, but people/kids are usually scared of him   I don't get how anyone can be scared of a little 30lb dog, lol

Oakley's such a cutie, I'd be one of the people pressing my back against the wall and reminding myself "Petco is NOT a petting zoo, Petco is NOT a petting zoo" over and over again so that I didn't walk over to you and beg to pet him.

No guys, I'm not kidding. I really do have to remind myself of this before I go in petstores. :(

On the flip side, we take Darby to the ball diamonds twice a week (my daughter plays girls softball) and a really surprising number of kids come up and politely ask if they may pet my puppy. (Far more than just try to do it without asking.) I always say, "yes, so long as she's sitting," and most are very good about waiting until Darby is calm.

The adults are actually worse and generally continue petting when Darby jumps. I ask them to stop until she's sitting, and they'll say, "oh, that's OK." Then again, prior to being a dog owner I probably would have done the exact same thing.
