I had a very good visit with my grandmother today.
She's had a few strokes and we went to visit in September and she did not speak or do anything the entire time. I didn't even know if she was aware we were there until we left and she said 'don't go'. I seriously left thinking I would never see her again that day and it ripped me apart.
But today she was talking (albeit only when asked questions and talked to). She told some hilarious stories and was laughing at everything. I was talking to my uncle that lives in town and he said these kinds of days are very rare with her. Most days she doesn't talk or seem to understand anything going on.
When we left she started crying though about us leaving and once again it ripped my heart out. I wish I lived closer but it is a full day trip to see her and there's usually no way to know if she will even know you're there. She did not remember us coming up in late september at all and was upset we hadn't come to visit since last christmas (she thought even though we've visited a few times). This kind of stuff is hard. And that nursing home is depressing.
That's kind of depressing for the good news thread, sorry. I'm just really happy I got to see her again and also got to see her on a good day.
