I took each of the boys out to the golf course for a little running around and to practice some off leash work, which is brand new to us. I had an epiphany about a week ago that I don't put enough trust into them, specifically Riff... of course he's going to go out of my comfort zone if my comfort zone is only about 10 feet away from me. So I put him on a long line, practiced some recalls, then dropped the line and let it drag. Riff was GREAT. So great. Once I pushed past the panic of seeing my dog run in a different direction than me, it went so well. He naturally doesn't stray too far. We played some frisbee, and after quite a while of doing that I took the leash off completely. He was perfect. So proud of him!
I took Rowan out, too, after I put Riff up. I trust Rowan a lot less because he's got such strong prey drive... I know if he sees something small and furry, he'll be gone, at least at this point in his training. But it's snowy and icy and all the critters that live on the golf course seem to be in hiding, so I ended up letting the leash drag for him a bit, too. He wasn't as good as Riff - he got distracted a few times and I had to chase him down a couple times (not that he ran THAT far, but farther than I trust him to be)... but he was still a LOT better than I expected! I'm so proud of my boys
Then as we were going inside we did see a bunny, and his focus was GONE. Good thing I was holding the leash. Well... it's a work in progress
