Stinky Doggy Syndrome

Our little yorkie, Athena, has a bit of a problem. And it stinks...

We've had yorkies before, and we've never had this issue. She smells, and no matter what we do we can't kill the smell, her breath is horrid and her fur smells like dirty socks. She's bathed once a week, but her good smell only lasts throughout the night, all dirty clothes are kept in hampers inside the closet. I know some dogs have this problem, what is it and how the heck do we get rid of it. It's starting to smell like dirty dogs in our house cause we can't bathe apollo for a few more days, and Athena smells...bad...Also, she eats the neighbourhoods cat poop. Basically questions im asking are
1) How do you make a 2 year old yorkie stop stinking if regular baths aren't the question?
2) How do you get a yorkie to STOP EATING CAT POO

Try an enclosed litter box, first off, and maybe put a baby gate across the doorway to the room where you keep the litterbox.

As for her stinking; it sounds like an internal problem. How long has it been going on? Start from the basics - what is she eating (besides the cat poo - lol - doggie bon bons, ugh!)?

Next question: have you had her checked at the vet to make sure she hasn't picked up any kind of internal infections, disease or parasites?

In addition to Renee's suggestions, I noticed something with my dog Shiner..

Sometimes, the kibble they eat just makes them smell absolutely foul. Shiner was eating Eukanuba, and I noticed that she just didn't smell good. When I switched her over to Solid Gold (I believe that is what she was eating before I gave her a homecooked diet) there was a MUCH longer time between baths and she kept the good shampoo smell in her fur for weeks.

Is her coat very oily?

My mom's boyfriend quite frequently feeds her left over table scraps, sometimes veggies, sometimes little peices of meat or plain noodles, would that cause the smell as well?

The cat poop is outside, the neighbourhood has alot of stray cats that just go and crap wherever they want and Athena likes to find it and turn it into a chocolate bar and have a snack. She has no problem with the litter box, it's in a pretty tough to get to spot for anything other than cats. It's outside, my mom caught her doing it and scared her off of it, too gross, Right now she's just eating Kibbles and Bits. We try and bathe has as often as possible without causing possible infections to the skin and stuff, so we only do it once a week for her safety. But she stinks like a day or two after, just as bad or worse than before. It's the neverending stink!

I would take her to a vet and check her out in case she does have some parasites or skin problems like renee has mentioned. Alot of times this alone can be the problem and solved with medication! That also goes for the bad breath too.. I'd go check with the doc.

K, Will do, my mom will be extatic about the information you guys have provided. When she started to get frustrated due to the smell of her she had no solution and i said "well i could ask the members on chazhound and see if they have any ideas" becuase in my personal opinion, no dog smells like roses. I PERSONALLY think it has something to do with her getting older, our old yorkie poo had a nasty smell to him after he was around her age, and it just got so bad that.... it was un-tolerable. He had doggy perfume to cover the smell from time to time, but i'll tell her to make an appointment and have a vet lookat her. She seems fine, which is strange, she's high energy and is always bouncing around, her stools are fine too, and she eats on a regular basis. Just not a very balanced diet

It's not necessarily the table food I'd worry about as being a contributing factor to her Pepe le Peu syndrome; ditch the Kibbles 'N' Bits! Check out the threads here on dog nutrition and feeds (you'll find several) and look at the reference for the chart on dog foods containing the drug used to euthanize animals. Dog food isn't what you think it is, and it's gotten worse - not better - in recent years. DON'T let the vet sell you Hills's Science Diet or Eukanuba, either. Big price difference, small difference in quality.

I can't believe the prices for Eukanuba,steve's mother feeds their boston terrier Eukanuba ...We feed Apollo Alpo. he seems to enjoy it, it's not too costly, and his poopies are healthy I make sure to check them cause i found it's the easiest way to see if somethings wrong. Dogs can't talk so you gotta go by body language and poop lol.

Mine stink occasionally, but it's easy to trace the cause - usually having to do with cow-generated mud! Ugh! Then there was the night a couple of weeks ago when Shiva startled the skunk. Double-ugh!

When they're relatively clean they don't have a doggy smell, either. Shame they don't stay relatively clean all the time . . . ROFL

My dogs do not stink at all. Sometimes the things they get into makes them stink, but the dogs themselves don't have a doggy odor, which I attribute to their diet.

Buster, on the other hand, has that HORRIBLE popcorn/fritos smell to him, I attribute that to what he eats, but my mom says that it's just a 'dog thing'.. No use arguing with her, because in her mind, she always wins.

Athena has a similar smell to buster. He smells like artificial popcorn that is cooking in the microwave and with a faint smell of doritos. Her coat is shiny and soft, she just... smells bad!!!
So far i haven't heard anything good about kibbles and bits, and i told her what you all said and she agreed she said that she first started smelling that bad when she started to buy her the K&B
