This is what my sister calls it and she's had dogs (and a litter) a lot longer then I. Although, growing up on a farm with dogs, I never remember smelling this.

George (intact male, 9mo ish old) was outside playing with Mick (my sister's neutered beagle/jack russel) and when they came in George smelled SOOO bad. He was also licking his butt, but that isn't too unusual. My sis said he's got a case of Stink-Butt.

There was NO WAY he's going in the car smelling like that so he got a half bath. (just washed his 'wither's to tip of tail, and butt of course)

he doesn't smell like this anymore, but, I don't want a repeat.

Any ideas, Information, enlightenment?

sounds like anal glands. I've never had to deal with them so you'll probably want to search the forums.

I agree with Saje... sounds like anal glands. I had a pug that would frequently have that problem and it is the MOST horrendous smell I think I've ever smelled. There are no words to describe how bad that smells.... stink butt just doesn't seem to begin to describe it....lol.

Anyway, the vet told me that with each bowel movement... the anal glands drain. When they don't drain they swell up and are full of the "stink butt" yucky stuff. The dog usually will start dragging it's bottom across the floor, some dogs do excessive licking in that area.

In the beginning I used to take my dog to the vet and have them drain them... but that quickly became expensive because it would happen quite frequently at times and then not happen for a long time. My vet showed me how to drain them.... ewwww... just remembering those days STILL grosses me out.

I am definately not an expert in this area... I am only telling you about my experience with my dog and what worked for me. I would definately take your dog to the vet and have them assess whether it is the anal glands causing the "stink butt" syndrome...lol.

one of my friends dogs had anal gland problems and said she had to drain them herself to.. but is it one of those things we can do if we know how or should it be one of the things we let a vet do?

Your vet can show you how to express the anal glands. Your dog probably got excited or startled by the other dog, causing him to release his glands. It really is a horrible smell! Some dogs do not express them on their own ( they usually do this when they defecate, this is what other dogs smell in the poop, its their "signature"). sometimes the opening to the gland gets blocked and they need help to express it. If it does not get expressed, the gland will abcess and that is painful.
I am sure your vet would be happy to show you how to do this. Some people are totally grossed out by this and would prefer the vet to do it. If this is the case, don't feel bad :) just make sure you have it checked periodically to make sure there is no problem.

oh man... Since we don't have enough to extra money to pay for a vet visit to evacuate glands... we'll either have to do it ourselves, (yuck) or maybe a groomer??? We'll see. I'm sure I'll let you know. :)

Sounds like anal glands. It's really quite easy to express them but I would have a vet or groomer show you how before you go violating your dog. ;)

well, I took him to go play with Mick again the next day... didn't happen again.. Thank Goodness!

He played outside for 3 hours with Mick and Molly (mick's mom) and they ran him ragged, wow was he one tired puppy for the rest of the day.

So, i'll look into a good grooming session with anal gland cleaning. fun fun fun. :)

Anal glands sounds right. I do it with a lot of my grooms at work. Especially the older dogs, because it's so common for them to stop draining them as much.

All males are different. A had one male I had to clean from time to time... Chip has never had any problems. Look up Anal Glands on line.... they give you a step by step. I did it in the shower while bathing as it really squirts some times and STINKS!!!

Look for them licking their rear excessively or dragging it on the floor. It may even have a full appearance when you inspect to see if the glands need drained. Let me know if you need help on how to properly drain.
